Advocate editorial board opinion: Libraries should drop jail policies

Margaret Rutherford said,

"Two individuals from different states when told of the handcuffing, shackling, and jailing of library patrons for overdue books could not believe this was done. Both expressed concern and one said she would be afraid to use the library. Whatever the policies, those who create these need to be aware of the harm this had done to the image of the library and Victoria. Also, policy makers need to consider the cost of the use of police force to arrest, jail and try the library patrons. I agree that when books/materials are not returned, the card should be cancelled until the person appears at the library to pay the fines or cost of lost materials. A collection agency should be considered. With cuts in so many areas of the city and county, one would think that using our law enforcement to arrest people for book fines when there is real crime occurring is an unwise use of resources. Common sense needs to be used. Citizens deserve protection from crime by our law enforcement. Our courts do not need additional burdens placed on already loaded dockets. Country works when citizens are rational

Mike Austin said,

"Rational by whose standards? I'd be more inclined to think that "government" not country, works when political parties are rational........the citizens made their choices........unfortunately, the demi-gods they elected, are the ones that are not rational. Maybe just a little more scrutiny next vote on the true character of who they vote for, as opposed to skin color, gender, and corporate sponsorship, media bias, and funding, would lend itself to getting a few more folks into office who actually represent the citizens, as opposed to the 1% who have the money and favor the wars ." - 17 hours, 16 minutes ago

Advocate editorial board opinion: Libraries should drop jail policies

Mancie Beck said,

"If the money collected through the court system went back to the library to replace lost or damaged materials then I could see the point. Since the money is not returned to the library, I do not understand why this is considered a viable option for collecting money for fines, etc. This policy is obviously outdated and as a VPL card holder, I never knew it existed (I did locate the statement on the VPL web site http://www.victoriatx.org/departments/library/using-the-library/fines-fees ). My biggest concern about this entire situation is that the community will no longer support the library. Several people have already commented that they will not or do not visit the library and that is heartbreaking! I am a librarian and the most important job I have is to foster the love of reading (and the library). With that said, responsibility is expected in many aspects of life. One such responsibility is owning a library card and borrowing books/materials. I absolutely think that the library needs to revisit and update their policy on overdue materials. The collection agency that Copperas Cove seems like a good option that will allow the money to go back into the library to purchase new materials and allow the library to focus on its goal (which I couldn't locate a mission statement, but I want to assume that it is along the lines of supporting learning, technology, and reading for all patrons). :) " - 18 hours, 33 minutes ago

Advocate editorial board opinion: Libraries should drop jail policies

Denise Scott said,

"On two separate occasions I returned books and received late due notices. On one the book was found immediately; the book had not been checked in on return. The other one required a search because it was also not checked in, and the book was eventually found in the wrong location; someone just happened to stumble onto it. So it is not always the patron's fault. If it, however, the idea that materials should be tied to a credit or debit card is a great idea. Very few do not have at least a checking account anymore. All gov't checks and many payroll checks require direct deposit. " - 19 hours, 38 minutes ago

"Remember, not one Republican supported Obamacare and also remember that it is proving to be a disaster, and is in process of possibly being overthrown. If you would listen more closely you would recognize that Obama appears to be incapable of telling the truth.
