Studying the markets
As you study listings of potential publishers for your projects, one very important thing to look for is if that publisher even accepts submissions from unpublished writers. They'll tell you in no uncertain language if they do not. I don't know first-hand, but I have a feeling any submissions from writers who haven't been published or don't have an agent go straight into the trash. Study listings carefully, both for publishers and agents, and find the ones that best match your project. It takes some time and patience, but in the long run could very well be worth it. I'm sure some publishing companies have a large dumpster in the back of the building. You are right on about studying the listings. It's definitely not a joyous occasion to get a reject letter for this (if they are cool enough to send you one). Make sure to follow their guidelines for submissions. posted by
