The Write Stuff
This blog is about writing. Not reporting or journalism, but creative writing -- poetry, short stories, novels. And not just about the finished product but how we, as writers go about the process, and the trials, tribulations, blood, sweat and tears that go along with it. I'll also talk about another process -- publishing. Finding the right literary agent or publisher, self-publishing, e-publishing, what are the options and what are the chances of breaking into print? That's about it. I am by no means a best selling novelist or have all the answers, but consider this the beginning of a dialogue among a group of people who put pen to paper (okay, finger to keyboard) to release something inside us, something that must be shared.

ALongLook - > The Write Stuff -> At least it was quick
At least it was quick

Sent out my first electronic query to a big New York agency over the weekend and had a response back early Monday morning.

Although they found the project "interesting" it wasn't what "they were looking for at this time."

Hey. At least they answered promptly and didn't make me wait and wonder. It's a numbers game. I'll get some more queries out this weekend, cross my fingers and keep writing.

You keep writing, too.

Yes Sonny, I find the query process pretty disenchanting.  I mean, first they make it as hard as possible: we prefer snail mail, we prefer e-mail, we prefer a one page synopis--author's bio included, compare your work to another published author (but don't disparage said author or his works), absolutely do not self-publish (apparently a big no-no)--but if you did, make sure to tell us if it sold moderately well,  etc.  Then ultimately, they give your idea the ol' thumbs down without reading the manuscript (or even part of it).  Agents--I hope they become obsolete someday soon.  However, on a positive note, I do admire the output of a local author named Linda Mooney.  She has a few self-published works available at Hastings and has pretty much covered the self-promotion spectrum--Myspace, Facebook, pod-casts, YouTube, et al.  Best of luck to you, Sonny.

Wow - a good response nonetheless. It looks like you are heading in the right direction. Keep pounding the keyboard, you'll get there. :-)
