Pop Goes the Culture
Shoulder pads, slap bracelets, Sinead O'Connor, streakers, sideburns, Sex and the City, string art, sea monkeys, SUVs, the Slinky. The best part about trends and passing fads (besides blackmailing your friend with the picture you have of her in that 1986 poodle perm) is the insight it can give us about our world. Sure, at the time a rat tail and listening to New Kids on the Block may have just seemed like harmless fun, but trends are more than just being able to say "Yes, I too tried the Adkins diet." And so this blog is devoted to finding all the latest trends and passing fads our culture can come up with and trying to figure out what they say about us other than at one point, we too thought the Emo look was cool.

AprillBrandon - > Pop Goes the Culture -> Why, next thing they'll be giving them the vote!
Why, next thing they'll be giving them the vote!

Although this blog is all about what's new in pop culture, every once in awhile it is pertinent to go back to the past just to see how far we've come. And today, one Advocate reader showed me a past that made me cringe while simultaneously made me rejoice that I live in the present.

So what was this oh-so-revealing bit of past?

Well, in today's letter to the editor, Wayne Johns (or as I like to refer to him, Prude McSexist) wrote:

"Whatever happened to little girls playing with dolls and dreaming of becoming wives and mothers? Whatever happened to young men looking for a good Christian wife and finding a young woman still clinging to her doll? Me, old fashioned? I guess. Me, a male chauvinist pig? To answer that I would have to say, “Oink, oink, oink.”"

And to that I say, whatever happened to old men shutting the hell up?

Seriously, dude? Seriously you believe crap like that? Well, for one, my condolences to your wife and any daughters you may have. And two, I'm sorry you're offended by all of us liberated women flashing our ankles around like a bunch of hussies but um...what can I say? They gave us the vote and then we got all uppity, believing we could think for ourselves and realizing we didn't have to be in a constant state of pregnancy if we didn't want to be.

Oh, and three, don't be surprised if you find all your tires flat because a gang of women slashed them with their stilettos.

And as a young woman, as much as I'd like to be sitting around clinging to my doll as I wait for some good Christian man to find me, I find that unfortunately, God blessed me with brains and common sense.

I guess there aren't too many insults I can sling your way Mr. Johns, considering you already fully realize you are a male chauvinist pig. The only thing really left to say is that I find that most men who are trying to keep women down are inferior to women in almost every way.

But I do agree with one aspect of your particular brand of thinking, Mr. Johns. And that is that women do belong in the house...and the Senate.

Pilot, if your own sniping was targeted at me, since I don't seem to believe as you do, I'll give you a chance at target practice pretty soon. I hope to devote some time to blogging next week, and you're more than welcome use me as target practice for your ideas. Just remember, no personal attacks.

I don't look at questions as "dodging bullets" but as an exchange of ideas. I hope you will too.

Or letting them drive cars, or own their own businesses......shudder.

Some of us old guys just can't seem to "shut the hell up"............unfortunately, some others tend to screw things up for the rest of us! By the same token, some women tend to pee in the pool too, murkying up the water for the truly free thinkers. You obviously grasp the importance of standing your ground. One of the few good points about this new system of blogging here, is that everybody has a chance at spewing their stuff out and sitting back to watch and see if it floats or sinks. Maybe the ones that take sport in sitting back and sniping at any and everybody who doesn't believe as they do, should take the time to start a blog. Come up with a title, and tell some stories..... or rant, or preach or just pitch a b****, Instead of taking shots at the sitting ducks, hop into the pond and try dodging bullets...........

"Whatever happened to little girls playing with dolls and dreaming of becoming wives and mothers?"

I'll answer that for you, Mr.Johns.   THEY GREW UP!

Thanks for writing this blog. Now I know I'm not the only one that felt this way about his stupid editorial.

Hello Aprill,

Certain topics do set people off. I wonder how much the letter writer really THOUGHT about what he wrote before he sent the letter. If he didn't think much MAYBE he sees the hillarity in some of the points he made.

If he DID think deeply about what he wrote, then the man does need a bit of a cultural update.

I think the women's movement brought a host of great things. One of the last things I want to HAVE to do is depend on a man for my livelihood and have no other way to support myself. I have to thank my mom for teaching me independence and realizing that women need to be able to take care of themselves.

I also think the women's movement has its flaws. One of them is that a huge group of women are not able to denounce the targeting of female children in the womb for abortion.  As you might know, female fetuses are chosen over males, mainly in China and Asia, because of economic or cultural reasons. All months of gestation have been up for "grabs."

To me, the women's movement has failed these females, because it values a woman's "choice" over a child's life. The lack of women in China has led to gangs kidnapping women in North Korea and other countries to bring back as "wives." This is hardly a gain in women's rights.

I hugely admire some of the early feminists, such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth C. Stanton. Women are certainly equal to men, especially in our dignity, and these founders still help some people to realize that.
