Pop Goes the Culture
Shoulder pads, slap bracelets, Sinead O'Connor, streakers, sideburns, Sex and the City, string art, sea monkeys, SUVs, the Slinky. The best part about trends and passing fads (besides blackmailing your friend with the picture you have of her in that 1986 poodle perm) is the insight it can give us about our world. Sure, at the time a rat tail and listening to New Kids on the Block may have just seemed like harmless fun, but trends are more than just being able to say "Yes, I too tried the Adkins diet." And so this blog is devoted to finding all the latest trends and passing fads our culture can come up with and trying to figure out what they say about us other than at one point, we too thought the Emo look was cool.

AprillBrandon - > Pop Goes the Culture -> California Supreme Court overturns gay marriage ban
California Supreme Court overturns gay marriage ban

With the recent Advocate story about GLBT of Victoria holding a gay pride celebration this Saturday blowing up the discussion forums, I thought I'd pass along this story from the Los Angeles Times.

The Calif. Supreme Court ruled 4-3 today that same-sex couples should be permitted to get married and stating that state marriage laws are discriminatory. The ruling affects more than 100,000 same sex couples in the state, about a fourth of which have children, the article said.

However, the article also states:

"The state high court's 4-3 ruling was unlikely to end the debate over gay matrimony in California. A group has circulated petitions for a November ballot initiative that would amend the state Constitution to block same-sex marriage, while the Legislature has twice passed bills to authorize gay marriage. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed both."

So far, 27 states have passed constitutional amendments banning gay marriage. Before today, only Massechusetts top court has ruled in favor of permitting gay marriages.

I'll tell you what's wrong with this world......When a person who is NOT homosexual/gay, the first thing that enters their mind when they even see the word or see two people of the same sex hold hands is SEX.  PEOPLE!! It isn't about sex, it is all about LOVE.

The matter of Gay Marriage or Gay Parades or Gay Events aside, what's starting to get to me is all this acrimony to people who don't believe or feel the way I feel.

For the lack of better differentiation, we'll call them the "left" and the "right."

The Right hates the Left because those Lefties condone kite flying [lest we inadvertently offend someone] which is clearly against the Word and the Word is what Righties live by. Of course not all the Righties interpret the Word the same way so there are your Index Righties, your Ring Righties, your Thumb Righties, your Pinkie Righties and then the ones who are WAAAAY out there, the One-Finger Wave Righties. Each of them interprets the Word in their own way which indeed often leads to one Rightie sect to hate one or more of the other groups but at least they ALL hate the Lefties who believe in.... well, pretty much nothing other than looking out for #1, not to be confused with the One-Finger Wave Righties.

The one thing Lefties *do* believe in is letting everyone "do his own thing" and making sure no one gets offended by having it pointed out that they are different. This core belief is rooted in Lefties' wanting to be left alone to do whatever they want to do without having to answer to anyone so they believe it's only fair that they in turn bother no one else - except of course those narrow minded, discriminatory Righties. It also is quite convenient in preventing Lefties from having to take any definite stance on anything other than hating Righties - whom they often call "Haters." Go figure....

Soooo... how is it conceivable that the group that condones homosexuality - based on their belief structures - HATES the side that condemns homosexuality - based on *their* belief structures - and calls them "Haters."

Are you people listening to yourselves? Or just prattling on to make a breeze?

Oy...

Remember when being born American meant you had the right to the pursuit of happiness as long as you weren't hurting anyone else?

It seems now that people that are unhappy with their lives like to go out of the way to make sure everyone else is unhappy and miserable as well, and some people just like to hate on other people.

Cali doesn't subscribe to following the rest of the world as I see it, when it comes to outdated archaic laws. I fully feel that adults should not be told whom they may love or choose as a companion, based on religious beliefs, which is what most of the laws dealing with same sex unions are based on. There is a reason that marriage ceremonies may be performed in a court of law or by a ships captain as opposed to only by an ordained minister. Damn shame in my book, that marriage can't be dissolved by a ships captain as well. The cruise line business would skyrocket! Marriage aside, the laws are so stacked in this country in favor of big corporations(insurance/benefits), that it's easy to see why they would lobby against a practice that would cut into their profits. I personally believe that siblings and adults/parents should be allowed to claim a legal union if they choose to live in the same place, simply for the economics involved and for sons and daughters to be able to cover an aging parent medically.

Thank you for this blog, Aprill.  That group that the article references is also calling on their supporters (through their website) to donate $10 million towards a massive anti-gay campaign, complete with radio and TV ads, direct mailings, and yard signs.  Back in April, they also launched another radio ad campaign in New Jersey urging residents to contact their legislators to support "traditional" marriage, featuring CHILDREN "questioning the implications of same-sex marriage" (their words).

It's amazing what lengths some people will go to just to spew their message of hate.  I can't imagine spending my every waking hour, putting forth all my energy, into forcing a message like this onto everyone.  Karma's too much of a b*@%h to spend this lifetime doing something like that.  Live and let live.

So, so sad.
