Pop Goes the Culture
Shoulder pads, slap bracelets, Sinead O'Connor, streakers, sideburns, Sex and the City, string art, sea monkeys, SUVs, the Slinky. The best part about trends and passing fads (besides blackmailing your friend with the picture you have of her in that 1986 poodle perm) is the insight it can give us about our world. Sure, at the time a rat tail and listening to New Kids on the Block may have just seemed like harmless fun, but trends are more than just being able to say "Yes, I too tried the Adkins diet." And so this blog is devoted to finding all the latest trends and passing fads our culture can come up with and trying to figure out what they say about us other than at one point, we too thought the Emo look was cool.

AprillBrandon - > Pop Goes the Culture -> Lolita Girls
Lolita Girls

It's a trend that hit big in Japan in the 90's and in more recent years gained a following here in the U.S. Called Lolita Fashion (and thusly, those who adhere to the style are called Lolita Girls) it originated as a fasion subculture in Japan and is influenced mainly by Victorian era children's clothing and costumes from the Rococo period.

And now it has hit Victoria.

On a recent Advocate discussion forum, one poster brought up the fact that she and her friends are Lolita Girls.

Always being big into fashion and unique styles, this got me interested in doing a story on this unique trend from the East. And as such, I'm looking for anyone out there who is a Lolita Girl or likes to wear this style who wouldn't mind being interviewed for the story.

If interested, feel free to drop me a line at 361-580-6514 or email me at abrandon@vicad.com.

Yeah, I think the Sailor's right.  These are not children, or teens, they are adults which makes this even more weird and creepy than I originally thought.

What is the thinking? Like the Goth thing had a 'philosphy' if you will.  What is attached to this way of dress?

I guessing, "I'm looking for a daddy who won't make me grow up..."

Really, what is it with the Japanese and dressing like slutty schoolgirls?

I thought the school uniform with the extremely short skirts was bad enough.

The Victoria era stuff, though, that's funny - they were so freaky about sex back then, clothes from the neck to the feet.

I have yet to see a Lolita girl yet - has anyone seen them in the Mall?

Fascinating, but I'm sorry, this is creepy.  Besides looking completely silly, I can only imagine that these girls are pervert magnets.
