Pop Goes the Culture
Shoulder pads, slap bracelets, Sinead O'Connor, streakers, sideburns, Sex and the City, string art, sea monkeys, SUVs, the Slinky. The best part about trends and passing fads (besides blackmailing your friend with the picture you have of her in that 1986 poodle perm) is the insight it can give us about our world. Sure, at the time a rat tail and listening to New Kids on the Block may have just seemed like harmless fun, but trends are more than just being able to say "Yes, I too tried the Adkins diet." And so this blog is devoted to finding all the latest trends and passing fads our culture can come up with and trying to figure out what they say about us other than at one point, we too thought the Emo look was cool.

AprillBrandon - > Pop Goes the Culture -> Oh, those young cell phone loving Democrats
Oh, those young cell phone loving Democrats

Here's a question for you: Cell phones are to young Democrats as landlines are to...?

Young Republicans?

True story. According to the Pew Research Center, young people who use landlines are more conservative than those who use cell phones. After polling a bunch of under-30's by both landlines and cell phones, the report states:

"...cell-only young people are considerably less likely than young people reached by landline to identify with or lean to the Republican Party, and even less likely to say they support John McCain."

While the researchers don't know why this is so yet, according to writer Clive Thompson's blog, this discovery could begin to affect landline polls. As the Pew researchers put it:

"Traditional landline surveys are typically weighted to compensate for age and other demographic differences, but the process depends on the assumption that the people reached over landlines are similar politically to their cell-only counterparts. These surveys suggest that this assumption is increasingly questionable, particularly among younger people."

So the question is now, is this discovery going to affect the outcome of polls in the upcoming months? Guess we'll just have to wait and see...

"Maybe they are not real Democrats?"

Oh SouthTexas, they are TRUE Democrats. You people need to do that, not me.

Just speak the truth and we can work it out. I try to follow that, except when I am talking to a political poll taker or survey....hehehehe.

And Ermie, don't worry. I also have never been a slave to fashion. All you have to do is look at what I wear,...and ask my wife. ;)

Heck, all  you have to do is keep it long enough and it comes back into fashion.

SouthTexas,
I think you're the poor lost soul. Shouldn't you be at Bible Study or something?

Now Lbb, you *know* that SUV is my wife's vehicle.

Like all good red-blooded Texas macho dudes, I drive a pickup. And like all good Texas macho oilmen, it's belongs to my employer.

I did have an S-10 for a while....

and let me at them 'gators, too!

Let's see, I have several republican friends.  One drives a Jeep Liberty; one drives a Honda SUV with a Bush/cheney '04 sticker still on it, unaware, apparently that THAT election was over almost 4 years ago; another drives a suburban with B/C sticker, ditto; another drives a Toyota 4Runner; Republican next-door-neighbor drives a Ford Explorer, another friend drives a Ford Explorer and so on.  Oh!, I almost forgot--my esteemed friend, EC, owns an SUV!

I don't know, southtexas, maybe they aren't real republicans-EVERY one of them has a cell phone!

My personal survey:  I have four friends who are Democrats (poor lost souls)....we just don't discuss politics and we have a great time together.  Of the four two drive Suburbans, one Lincoln Navigator, and one Hummer.  Maybe they are not real Democrats?

Shut up Rage.. I'm trying to set the trend. Those clothes were in vogue once. They will be again someday!

I don't know why Ernie is making shelter remarks....just look at those Goodwill style clothes he has on in the picture lol

I think there is something screwy with the survey.

I know that everytime a Large SUV, usually driven by a woman yakking on a cell phone, blows past me, I think, "Damn Republican."  Most of the time I'm right because they still wear the Bush/Cheney stickers on the window.

This Democrat has never owned a cell phone, and I only carry the one from my office because they make me.

And, Ernest J. Cash--what is with the shelter remark?

Awww, April, you're much too young and energetic for this ol' geezer. But I do love your wit and candor.

Perhaps next time we have a barbecue with friends you'll drop by though. I (and Julie) would be happy to tip a glass with you!

...but the comment about the phones still stands. :-)

Oh Ernie, you are saucy this morning. And to think, I almost let you ask me out (with your wife's permission, of course).

Initially when Barack Obama was getting the huge crowds, his campaign signed up many new  young potential voters.(most had cell phones)...Will this be a factor?.Don't know.

Traditionally young voters do not vote, making the traditional land line a good source for polling, but this election year has been anything ,but tradional...Many,many surprises so far this year.

All this speculation....

Democrats don't have land lines as a general rule. They don't provide everyone in the shelter with his/her own phone line.

sheeesh...

I believe this is partially true. But you have the no call list, like that works much, and caller ID. If it looks like a survey, salesman, etc number I don't answer it. It goes to the recorder. Many, many of us "elders" do that nowadays.

But one thing our youngest son, who was a college Republican, learned from us when he was at college is that when the power goes out, yes also the power that feeds your cell tower your connected to, you can use a land line usually. And not one with a cordless phone. He was dead in the water for a little while except his land line.

So us "elders" have learned life lessons. And being raised by depression era parents many "old old school" lessons. Which it is our job to impart those lessons to our children. We made sure his room in his apartment had a basic package corded land line and a calling card. I was surprised how many sales calls got to an unlisted number.

But out of school he uses only cell phone, hard head. He like his parents classify himself as not really Republican but definintely Conservative.
