http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/... Well it's been talked about for a while, but it seems Apple is finally making major moves regarding online movie rentals through the iTunes Store. In addition they'll have a licensing deal of its anti-piracy technology. Will studio's play ball with this? There are a heaping helping of concerns about online movies and potential for piracy and other illegal goodness. Even with all the tech Apple can put out to keep people from recording the movies they rent online or whatever it is people will try to do, there is always a way to beat the system and folks will find a way. News Corp.'s Twentieth Century Fox is one of the first studios that has agreed to make its films available for rent digitally through iTunes. I watch a lot of movies, not a lot of TV. What I do watch on TV, I d/l (Heroes, Law & Order, etc.) But I do like going to the video store to rent my movies. I doubt I will be one of those people to jump onto the online rental download bandwagon. I suppose if I had an awesome Internet connection, huge flat screen monitor and a banging surround sound system for my computer, then I might be more inclined. But I don't. I am anxious to see how this will play out and how many people will buy into it and how many companies will go along with it. Apple changed the face of getting music online and they seem to be ready to make big changes with how people get their movies as well.
In the days before it was Jackie Chan who was a no stuntmen, no wires, all out action kind of guy, but he is well past his prime and his time in the spotlight. So who are our generation's Chan.... Tony Jaa, a Muay Thai martial artist and all around butt-kicker. If you haven't seen any of his movies (Ong-Bak, the Protector, Battle Warrior), then you are really missing out. I submit for approval a display of this guy's talent. A scene from the Protector that was done in one take. A four-minute steadicam fight scene, it is just awesome. It took them weeks and weeks to plan and produce it, but it paid off. Check the guy out, of course his movies aren't going to be Oscar winners, but for that genre you are just looking forward to fists and feet flying and bones breaking and this guy provides all that and so much more. 1) Spider-Man 3 $336,530,303 2) Shrek the Third $321,012,359 3) Transformers $319,071,806 4) Pirates of the Caribbean:At World's End $309,420,425 5) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix $292,004,738 6) The Bourne Ultimatum $227,471,070 7) 300 $210,614,939 8) Ratatouille $206,445,654 9) The Simpsons Movie $183,132,370 10) Wilds Hogs $168,273,550 Most anticipated of 2008 Who doesn't think of Christmas when they hear those words? And if you don't well you should. It's that time of year again for the Christmas movie event: the "Christmas Story." unless you have been living under a rock for the past.....ever, you know that it's the heartwarming story of Ralphie Parker (Peter Billingsley), who just wants a BB gun for Christmas. Specifically, "an official Red Ryder, carbine action, two-hundred shot range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and 'this thing' which tells time." I could go on a rant about this movie and how much I love it, but much like a rant of mine on "Spider-man 3" or Michael Bay as the director on "The Transformers," that would take a while. For me this is the Christmas movie. Sure there's the "Miracle on 34th Street" and "it's a Wonderful Life" and in recent years there have been several attempts to give us great Christmas movies, but "A Christmas Story" is it for me. Will Smith proved he could be legendary as his latest outing, "I Am Legend" ruled at the box office earning $77.2 million. $3.4 million of that came from IMAX screens. (A lot of those lucky folks got a dose of the first few minutes of "The Dark Knight"). It was the biggest December weekend gross ever, inching past "The Lord of the Rings: The Return the King"'s $72.9 million (though the latter sold more tickets). "Alvin and the Chipmunks", came in second with a strong $44.3 million. It should break even on it's $60 million budget in no time. The two movies boosted butts in movie seats and made the weekend the most attended mid-December frame on record. That is a remarkable turnaround after a largely suck-tacular fall and holiday slate led to weeks of the lowest attendance in a decade or more. I saw Legend Friday and I thought it was OK. It wasn't terrible, but it was nothing to write home about either. I was interested in seeing how Smith's character was clearly falling apart as the movie went, but it descended into a typical Hollywood shoot 'em up, happy ending and I think it would have been stronger if they went away from that. The controversial "The Golden Compass" could use some help with upward navigation. The film fell 66 percent to $8.8 million and has earned a timid $40.8 million in ten days. Haven't seen it yet, still debating on whether to see the movie or read the books first.
Source: Yahoo! Movies & Box Office Mojo So did all the talk surrounding the "Golden Compass" help or hinder the film's performance this past weekend? The film was at the top of the box office with about $26 million, dethroning "Enchanted" and beating it by $16 million. I haven't seen the movie yet. And I am debating whether or not to see the movie first or read the books first. I think the publicity surrounding the film only helped it. I think it roped in people who may not have gone to see the movie, but were curious about the whole anti-religion message of it. There's no such thing as bad publicity. People can call it that, but really if someone is talking about you, it's better than the alternative, right? I think the studio saw this and it served as part of the motivation for adapting the book. According to week one numbers, the move paid off, we shall see how it holds up in the long run.
Source: Yahoo! Movies I am including in this post the trailer for the film. I have watched it a few times and man when they said all green screen they meant all green screen... Movies synopsis of the movie talks of the world of violent, high-speed racing where Rex and Speed Racer are manipulated by powerful racer Mondragen in a plot to kill them and avenge his father who was killed by Pops Racer long ago. I was never a big fan of the TV series but I am interested in whether this adaption will succeed or fail. The Wachowskis are not afraid to throw a lot of technology and money at a movie, (V for Vendetta, Matrix Trilogy). That being said, that combination of money and tech doesn't always equal a good movie (see most of Matrix: Reloaded and all of Revolutions. Man that movie sucked. I don't care what anyone says). The movie is all green screen from people connected with the movies have said. Producer Joel Silver says the (effects) "are beyond belief. We called it 'car fu,' because it was like kung fu with the cars. We couldn't have made this movie until right now." That much f/x...will it be something awesome like 300 or something that causes massive seizures like Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow? Remains to be seen... The trailer should be online in a few days... In the meantime sing it with me now.... Here he comes Have you seen the trailers? Good gravy I have never been more excited to see a movie before in my life. Well okay maybe that's not true, but this is right up there with some of my most anticipated moments. I saw the first teaser before the "Transformers" back in the summer. It was a first person view of friends at a part wishing a departing friend (Jake Gyllhenaal) well. Next thing you know the place shakes and they think it's an earthquake. Heading to the roof they see fire, chaos and death from some unseen force. The group makes a break for it and finds even more chaos in the streets. We see this all from the view of the person holding the camera, Blair Witch Style. The last shot is of the head of the Statue of Liberty flying through the air bouncing off buildings and landing in the street. After that both me and my friend were scratching our heads wondering what we had just seen as a title was not revealed, just the release date. Since I recognized Gyllenhaal I went home to check the Internet to find his filmography and anything I could find on this movie. Well reports conflicted (thanks to the studio's brilliance) about the content of the movie. Some places called it a comedy about a boy and his monster among other things. The second trailer has hit and this is definitely a monster movie mixed with the Blair Witch Style and that is awesome. I cannot wait for this movie. So there has a been a some hoopla over this movie. It's based on the books by Phillip Pullman, a proud atheist. Pullman paints the Catholic church as the enemy in his books and has gone on record saying he wants to turn children away from God. Filmmakers have downplayed that aspect of the books and said they have made adjustments in the big screen version, but that remains to be seen. I am interested in talking to folks for a story who have an opinion either way about the books/movie. I can be reached at 361-580-6535 or bjlewis@vicad.com
Again, if you haven't seen the movie, go see it! To those of you who have, I thought it would be a great idea to do the park scene in and around Victoria. Can you see us at De Leon Plaza or the duck pond at Riverside Park?? Craziness and fun will ensue! Several other Advocate employees have already signed on to it but we will need more people. Singers, dancers, musicians, everyone!!!!! Come on, it will be fun! Feel free to contact me at 361-580-6535 or bjlewis@vicad.com Although this this post-Thanksgiving frame was the least attended in a decade, "Enchanted" extended its reign with an estimated $17 million. Disney's fantasy comedy's 51 percent drop was solid by post-Thanksgiving standards for family fare. The film has earned $70.6 million thus far. I checked it out Friday. It was cute and funny although the talk about true love and all that made me want to throw up, but that's me. The dance routine in the park was extremely funny as well. If you haven't seen it, take your kids, wife, hubby, whoever. If you're not in the mood for Disney cheesiness, check out "The Mist" that is a very very good movie. It's not overly scary, but it will keep you on the edge of your seat as you wait to see what these desperate, trapped people will do next to fight back against the the monsters terrorizing them and even their fellow survivors. Good movie. Messed up ending, but a good movie.
