Will It Ever Be Good Enough???
Lately, my biggets question at work is, "Will the boss ever be happy."  I do understand that running and owning a business is stressful and time consuming to no end.  Where I work, my boss is my dad and my manager is my brother.  Yeah, people would think I have it made. Outsiders looking in think "Oh she must have it easy working for her family."  Not really! I am the assistant manager, but I still have to be approved by my manager and boss before I can do anything! Somedays, I lay my heart out on the line. I work my butt off and at the end of the day my legs feel like they are going to give out and my hands ache.  I work in a meat market and I waitress, so keep in mind, I am constantly on my feet.  There is no break time, and if I do find a few minutes to get off my feet, I sit down to talk to a customer to make sure everything is alright with their meal.  I guess what I am getting to is that sometimes I feel that I work so hard and get nothing in return.  Other days however, I get complimented so much where I am floating on cloud 9.  I cant help but get frustrated at work when my boss or manager looks at something I did and frowns upon it like it wasn't the right way or not good enough.  But, I have come to realize, no matter how good it is, it is the bosses job to always expect more.  That's the only way to keep us employees on our toes and always trying harder.  I can't blame them for that!

has anyone ever thought about it from the bosses point of view?
i am a boss i own and run a restaurant, and i have employees. i understand your frustration as i get it too, when the employee is late or sick or just wants time off and your shorthanded, and it seems when your shorthanded your customers seem to know it and they show up with even more ppl than you can handle, i know i have been doing this for 17 yrs now
so yes there is frustration but look at what the boss has to deal with
the taxes
the rent
the time spent on the job, first one in last one to leave
the money being right each night
the bills
and if at the end of the week you have a few dollars left over you can put it aside but lots of times you dont meet your goal
and you have to suck it up and go on but the employee still gets paid
i have gone weeks without a paycheck, yes i to feel your frustration as i have to wait tables and cook too
and yes sometimes i feel it aint worth it
but at times like you said you get a compliment and you feel like your on cloud nine too
so just try to understand why we bosses cant always the glittering example of hope and happiness

I TOO WORK IN THE FAMILY  BUSINESS; TWO OF THEM. I KNOW IT'S NOT AS EASY AS JUST PACKING IT UP ALLTHOUGH THERE MAY COME A TIME WHEN YOU NEED TO. BUT I KNOW THE PERSONAL BETRAYAL OF FAMILY FEELING TOO.

EVEN THOUGH IT IS FAMILY I'VE FOUND SETTING PERSONAL GOALS OF DOING YOUR VERY BEST, TAKING CONSTRUTIVE CRITSISUM AS NEEDED THEN TURNING THE PAGE TO A NEW DAY THE BEST WAY TO HANDLE THIS FOR ME.I KNOW YOU TEND TO TAKE IT HOME WITH YOU BECAUSE IT'S CLOSE TO HOME. I HAVE FOUND HOWEVER IF YOUDRAW THE LINE AT WHAT YOU ARE WILLING TO ACCEPT AND DO ON YOUR TERMS THAN THE FAMILY/ BOSS ISN'T AS INCLINED TO PUSH YOU BEYOND THOSE LIMITS. OH THEY WILL TRY BUT KEEP WRESTED IN KNOWING YOUR PERSONAL LIMITS ARE FARE AND THAT AT THE END OF THE DAY YOU'VE DONE YOUR PERSONAL BEST. NO MATTER I FTHE BEES ARE STILL BUZZING ALL AROUND YOU. THEY TEND TO STOP AFTER AWHILE WHEN YOUR AT PEACE WITH YOURSELF.IF YOU SEE YOUSELF AS YOUR BOSS THAN IT'S UP TO YOU IF YOU'LL EVER BE HAPPY WITH YOUR WORK AND EFFORTS.

THEN YOU CAN GO HOME AND SLEEP GOOD KNOWING THAT WHAT YOU DO IS ALLWAYS GOOD ENOFF BECAUSE IT'S NOT BASED ON SOMEONES ELSES OPINION OF YOU. YOU HAVE DONE YOUR ALL TIME PERSONAL BEST WITH THE TIME GOD HAS BLESSED YOU WITH. YOU ARE THE CAPTAIN OF YOUR OWN SHIP. STEER IT WELL THENTAKE TIME TO FLOAT ON THE WAVES AND ENJOY THE RIDE.

Hold on there, Bri!  You started out by asking, "will the boss ever be happy?"  Then you end by accepting that you can never please the boss and it's actually the bosses "job" to expect more from you.  I've been working over 40 years and have never, ever been able to reach to height of approval from the bosses I've worked for.  No matter how good a job you do it's never enough.  Do you know why?  Because if you do your job well they might have to compensate you for it.  But if you do what's expected then they just see you as doing your job, period.

In your case, you are working with and for family members.  You are too close to your own boss.  Your dad will always expect more from you because you are his daughter, and you are a role model for other employees.  I doubt you're looking for advice but I'm going to give it to you anyway.  You sound like an honest, hard working young woman who knows your business.  Perhaps you should move on and take a job at another restaurant.  You may not get to be assistant manager right away, but even as a waitress at another restaurant, you would probably have a chance to take a break now and then.   There are so many restaurants in Victoria (I assume you are in Victoria) that need good help and you have the kind of experience they need.

Good luck to you!
