Is it your right to own a handgun?
The Supreme Court ruled today that the Constitution protects an individual's right to bear arms, the Associated Press reported. The court shot down the District of Columbia's handgun ban as an infringement on Constitutional rights. "The court's historic ruling reinterprets the Second Amendment for the first time in nearly 70 years, foreshadowing new challenges to local, state and federal guns laws," AP reports. The ruling leaves room for local governments to regulate gun ownership. Since 1976 the District has restricted handgun ownership to former or current law enforcement officers who registered their guns before 1977, TheHill.com reports. The law permitted shotguns and hunting rifles in homes but required them to be kept unloaded and either disassembled or fitted with a trigger lock, the Web site adds. Should the Supreme Court have shot down D.C.'s handgun ban? What are your thoughts? Thanks for your help, Gabe Semenza/Advocate public service editor 9 comments from 9 users

Five to four. SCOTUS overturned the D.C. ban on handguns, but the margin was small. The wrong president nominating an idiot who thinks people shouldn't have access to guns can turn this around. Be careful with your vote! Remember, gun control means using BOTH hands.

its seems there are people in this country that do not want citizens to have guns. i agree with gun control as long as responsible people have guns i have guns and i have never shot a person posted by

I think the crime rate in DC, which has historically been one of the highest in the nation (and that doesn't even count politics!) will likely recede a bit. Just a guess.... Ernie posted by

Every one has the right to bear arms and everyone should have the right to bare arms.

I'm thinking this sounds as earth shattering as the Roe v. Wade ruling was. As we all know that issue quickly faded away when the Supreme Court ruled on it too, didn't it? Sounds like the court said we have the right to "bare" arms.
