Is it your right to own a handgun?

The Supreme Court ruled today that the Constitution protects an individual's right to bear arms, the Associated Press reported.

The court shot down the District of Columbia's handgun ban as an infringement on Constitutional rights.

"The court's historic ruling reinterprets the Second Amendment for the first time in nearly 70 years, foreshadowing new challenges to local, state and federal guns laws," AP reports.

The ruling leaves room for local governments to regulate gun ownership.

Since 1976 the District has restricted handgun ownership to former or current law enforcement officers who registered their guns before 1977, TheHill.com reports.

The law permitted shotguns and hunting rifles in homes but required them to be kept unloaded and either disassembled or fitted with a trigger lock, the Web site adds.

Should the Supreme Court have shot down D.C.'s handgun ban? What are your thoughts?

Thanks for your help,

this is what I know.  My mom can own a gun.  a pit bull who is constantly running loose (against the law last time I looked) can come in her yard, kill her cat, growl at her and her neighbors children and if she shoots and kills it, she is in trouble,  Not because she doesnt have the right to shoot a vicous dog that the city wont do anything about after all these months and kat attacks, because the city of HICTORIA says she cant fire the gun..............stupid

Five to four.  SCOTUS overturned the D.C. ban on handguns, but the margin was small.   The wrong president nominating an idiot who thinks people shouldn't have access to guns can turn this around.  Be careful with your vote!  Remember, gun control means using BOTH hands.

What's all the fuss about?  I happen to love bear arms.

What's wrong with bear arms?

I am a firm believer in gun control. Aim for the head. Squeeze, don't  pull.

what gets me is that 4 of the 9 supremes think we shouldnt have guns  and i bet it doesnt end there
its seems there are people in this country that do not want citizens to have guns.
i agree with gun control as long as responsible people have guns
i have guns and i have never shot a person

I think the crime rate in DC, which has historically been one of the highest in the nation (and that doesn't even count politics!) will likely recede a bit.

Just a guess....

Every one has the right to bear arms and everyone should have the right to bare arms.
I am reminded of a Simpsons episode.
