WHERE WERE YOU AND WHAT WERE YOU DOING WHEN THE 9/11/2001 NEWS BROKE?
On the morning of 0/11/2001 we were working on an addition to a SPRINT fiber optics relay facility (Point of Presence) in a wheat field near Belfield, ND. Via telephone we were instructed, "Send everybody home until further notice and secure the site. Terrorists have attacked in  New York City and at the Pentagon. We don't know where they'll hit next"
"Surely our little project in this wheat field way out here in North Dakota wouldn't be a target."
"Anything to do with communications could be a logical target, regardless of how remote."

Will you ever forget where you were and what you were doing when you heard the news of the twin towers being attacked? What were your thoughts?  Was your work place possibly  a target?
The same place, activity and thoughts questions could be asked about the day John  F. Kennedy was shot (if you're old enough to remember).

I was on a yacht in Galveston Bay.  IT was such a peacful morning, quiet.  we noticed airplanes circling back to ariports but what do I know about air traffic patterns in houston?  We were listening to cd'sand slowly floating into towards a boat repair business.  one of the boats engines was giving problems.  When we docked, the gentleman at the boat repair place asked if we had heard the news.  IT was like living a horror movie.  Then I realized that my daughers cousin worked near.  He was one of those stories that something happened that he didnt go to work that day.

And Ernie, I thought  you were a lot younger than me.  I was in the 7th grade in English Class when the Kennedy announcement was made to all students at my jr high in Corpus.

I was between Rockport and Tivioli when the Challengar blew.  And I was in my living room when the shuttle blew up over texas.

Isnt it funny how we have such vivid memories of the bad but the good seems to fade sometimes?  Life truly is to short and we need to live it to the fullest each day.

I was at work at a police department south of Victoria. I too thought it was an accident and happened to walk into the media room where the chief and others were watching the news just as the second plane hit. I was shocked and just stood there and couldn't believe what had just happened. I was in a small town so we weren't so afraid of being a target but there are 2 naval bases not too far from Victoria not to mention a major seaport and a nuclear plant. Tension was high.

I also remember where I was when Challenger exploded just after take-off and the OKC bombing and Columbine and Virginia Tech. All things like this make a lasting impression and hopefully we learn from them and make our lives better. Days like those remind us to live each day to the fullest and take nothing and no one for granted.

I was in my fourth grade class in 1964 when Kennedy was assasinated in Dallas. About all I can remember of that day was another teacher coming in to the room, whispering something to Mrs. Shrimplin and then both of them running from the classroom crying.

I was leading a pre-job meeting with my crew on a frac job NW of Enid OK when the Murrah Building in OKC was bombed. We heard a muffled distant explosion and remarked what it might be suspecting some blasting being done at the gravel quarry near Okarche. After we'd begun pumping the news started trickling in; first about a possible natural gas explosion in downtown OKC and then finally the shocking news that the explosion wasn't a tragic accident but a heinous criminal terrorist act.

I  was in my office working here in Victoria on editing and updating the site's IT Security Policy when the news of the first plane hitting the WTC came over the portable radio in my office. At first it was suspected to be a private pilot gone off course or having some difficulty with his small plane. When the second jet hit and it was obvious it was, again, no freak accident we tuned CNN on the TV in conference room and began wonder how our comfortable world could so suddenly devolve into such disaster.
