Keeling Responds to League of Women Voters Questions
Tami Keeling Victoria Independent School District 5
New, smaller schools are exciting, but buildings alone will not fix everything. I will continue to support competitive pay for our teachers and staff. It is time for the board to make decisions on student conduct and dress. Changes are necessary so that the campus staff and the teachers have the tools they need to provide a safe and productive learning environment for our children. What can be done to better prepare VISD students for college or entering the workforce?
How would you suggest the district address its dropout and truancy situation?
What are your thoughts on separate graduation plans in academics, career and technology, or fine arts?
The Priority Action Team on Student Achievement has recommended G/T offerings for all elementary campuses next year for grades Kindergarten through Second. By 2009, all elementary schools will offer G/T instruction for grades K through Five. Teacher training and implementation of this program is already underway. To support this work and increased rigor in AP courses, VISD must have teachers that are trained to teach advanced measures and compensate them accordingly. Administration needs to be trained to evaluate accelerated instructional practices to ensure they meet curriculum standards. I support exploring the addition of an International Baccalaureate program. 4 comments from 3 users

Tom Tom, Thank you for your question. First let me say that I believe that the drop out rate in Texas is going to be very different from last year. This year, districts must count students who withdrew and received a GED as a drop out. In previous years, students who withdrew and received a GED were not counted as drop outs. I believe that we must start by convincing students that school has value, whether they attend a four year university, a community college, a technical school or enter the workforce or the military after graduation. I support strong academic pathways that lead to each of these destinations. I support strong multiple paths that serve VISD’s diverse student population. Quality career and technology programs lead to jobs for students and address the critical workforce shortage in Texas. I have and will advocate on behalf of students and employers that will benefit from career and technology education. I will ask that the state legislature reconsider its current position and invest in career and technology education. I am excited about the partnership between VISD and the business community. Working together, we have developed two new courses for this fall. This is a win, win partnership for our students, community and economic development. I understand your concern about extra curricular activities that are cost prohibitive for some students. I appreciate the view that participation in a public school sponsored activity should not be based on a student's ability to pay. In my opinion, this is easier to address in UIL activities. I believe that it is important for all our students to be connected to school and vested in learning in as many ways as possible. With the new requirements that districts spend at least a certain percentage of their budget on classroom instruction, keeping extra and co curricular activities adequately funded is challenging. At this time of rising fuel costs, travel expenses for teams are becoming real budget issues in many districts across Texas. Would welcome your thoughts on what you might find helpful. Thank you for your question. Tami Keeling T

Thank you for your question. The progress on the new schools is moving along well. Here is a brief update: Elementary Schools: These two new schools are set to open in the fall of 2009. Bids have been let and the opening of bids for the Lone Tree elementary school construction proposal will be May 22. The opening of proposals for the Ball Airport location will by May 28th. Contracts are awarded at a board meeting after proposals are opened. This date has not yet been set. Middle School and High Schools: All three of these new schools are set to open in the fall of 2010. The proposals for construction of the west high school and middle school located off Highway 87 will open on June 10 followed by a June 17 opening for the east high school construction. Each new High School has a 500 seat auditorium inside the school. The facilities recommendation includes 9 million dollars for a free standing auditorium and natatorium (indoor swimming pool), both to be located at the now Senior campus. Repairs and renovations have already begun throughout the district. The 4.5 million dollar remodel on Crain Middle School is scheduled to start after completion of the new buildings. Thank you for your interest in the bond and your schools. Tami Keeling posted by
