Victoria, please do not be fooled by all the smoke this woman has created. TAKS scores fell again, only 1/2 of the entering senior class graduated. Discipline is non existent. And now, after our city finally coming together to pass the bond with our very hard earned tax dollars, they have wasted so much this past year that the things we were promised are being cut. And no, no, no, the drill team has no use for an auditorium. They need a gym! More smoke. We need strong leadership. Our kids and their education and our town is in trouble. Keeling has had three years. VOTE TODAY! for Charlie Jaynes. posted by

These aren't really questions, but I'll address them. 1. TAKs scores are not yet in. So your statement has no basis in fact. The preliminary results are in and they are not the TEA accountability ratings. In addition, this year includes a change to the scores of special education students. VISD has a higher percentage of special education students than the state average. Preliminary results show a slight increase in already high scores of elementary schools. Secondary scores are down in some areas and up in others. I would like to point out that over the past two years, our teachers, staff and administration have lifted MHS to an acceptable rating, improvements happened at middle and elementary schools. More than 60% of our VISD campuses are exemplary or recognized--a great start in two years. We still have work to do, which is why I believe that I should be returned to office. 2. School safety and discipline were the number one issues on the Harris Poll. In order to address the problem, the Safe and Secure Learning Environment Committee has been hard at work. This committee has brought forward the Safe and Civil Schools discipline model and made recommendations on changes to the dress code. I support the new discipline model and the recommendations on changes to the dress code. We have to start doing something other than enforcement alone if want different results. I believe systemic change that puts administrators and teachers on the same page and provides teacher support will stop the blame game and give teachers and administrators the tools they need so that learning can take place. 3. In regard to dropouts, we have been working very hard on this problem and still have more work to do. We have added additional truancy officers, returned to a viable credit recovery program and more. In my opinion, many of these children were lost during the years of poor leadership in the district prior to Mr. Moore being hired. I have a daughter that just graduated in this class and I am well aware of the numbers and what has happened over the past 4 years. It might also interest you to know that the state of Texas has changed the rules on counting dropouts. In years past, a student who withdrew and took their GED was not a dropout, now they are--even if they get their GED and go on to take the THEA and go to a community college. Contrary to my opponent, I have a strong track record of working on solutions to address the dropout problem and support strong multiple paths to graduation. 4. VISD has wasted no time whatsoever and everyone is working hard to keep on schedule and within the budget. 5. I stand for building and repairing schools first, and will continue to keep VISD's primary educational mission as my focus as the board makes decisions on facilities. I am well aware that MHS Dance and Drill Team competition venue is a gym. I never said they needed an auditorium. In fact, I talked to Debbie Jaynes back in December and asked Mr. Leach about her, as well as other's, concerns about gym space in the two new high schools. When the two new high schools are complete, we will still have all the gym space at the existing campuses available for use. VISD has strong leadership in place, the board is working well and we are on the path to a quality school system. Would be happy to answer any other questions. Tami Keeling posted by

Ms. Keeling, why did you remove my request for the actual TAKS preliminary scores? Do you not want us to see them because they are not what you represent? If you remove this, my next call will be to other board members and then to the television station since the Advocate has chosen not to print them. Again, I contacted TEA and was told Mr. Moore received the preliminary scores three weeks ago. Several teachers have said they received their campus scores this past week. Several scores, including Memorial, if they stand will result in an academically unacceptable rating. Rather than argue over the numbers, would you please post those numbers immediately so that the public can make up their mind for themselves. As an informed board member, I must assume you have been provided the numbers. I eagerly await your response.

Did not intend to delete your post--answer follows. Would be happy for you to contact the television and the newspaper, as the discussion about the accountability system and how it works is rather complex and I think that it would be great for our local news to educate the public on the accountability system in the state of Texas. The TAKS scores that were released this week by VISD are the results of the TAKS testing throughout the spring. TAKS test scores do make up the majority of the indicators in the state's accountability system. However, the numbers released by the administration are the raw numbers and not the numbers that will ultimately be used in the accountability system. The TEA system is complicated, but anyone who wants to review the process used in determining the accountability ratings can visit the TEA website at www.tea.state.tx.us and look for the 2008 Accountability Manual. Chapters 2 and 4 explain accountability subsets and the standards for acceptable, recognized and exemplary ratings. The administration expects all campuses to be rated as Academically Acceptable, at a minimum. The Accountability ratings will come out on August 1. The ratings will be based on the accountability subsets. TEA will analyze enrollment on snapshot day, the scores on the accommodated tests, and a variety of other factors in determining what scores are included in the ratings. It is my understanding that the campuses have been doing manual calculations of those accountability subsets, but they are estimations and it is not appropriate to release a bunch of numbers that are speculation. The Superintendent told us in the news release this week that the expectation is that all the campuses will be rated as Academically Acceptable, based on the accountability system. Are VISD schools better now than they were two years ago? Our budget is balanced. Our teacher pay is higher. Our facilities are improving. Our test scores are improving. Our district is more unified. Our community is becoming involved. Our Superintendent is an effective leader. We have a clear vision of where we want to be and a pathway to get there. VISD is moving forward. The drop out and completion rates continue to be a concern, as does attendance. These are problems that developed over a period of years and unfortunately, they are not problems that will be fixed overnight. These are community issues, as well as school issues, and must be addressed as a team. Because I believe you are sincere in your concerns about our students, I strongly encourage you to become apart of the solution by joining one of the AIM teams. Our Strategic Planning process is based upon a vision of "Achieving Excellence for All." Two key components of making that vision a reality are high student achievement and providing for a safe, secure, and nurturing learning environment. No doubt you have insights into both areas. Contact the administration offices to learn more about how to become a part of the solution. VISD would appreciate your input. Thank you for your interest in our schools and this election. Ms. Keeling, Obviously the superintendent felt the teachers were intelligent enough to determine the results without them being manipulated. You insult my intelligence. If I have questons, I can pick up the phone and ask TEA or their representative and get an unbiased answer. The teachers that have seen the report did not make up what they saw. Again, why won't you let the public see for themselves? Academically unacceptable and just being base line acceptable is far from improvement as you well know..

parent- PLEASE contact the secretary of the board - Mr. Murphy. Then Walden (Pres) and Klimist (VP). They are your officers. They have been given the command of our board. There is no "on call" days for these positions. I don't understand your logic on choosing 1 trustee?!? even better yet since you called TEA then you know already that Mr. Moore has it. Call him. Let me know what he tells you. Don't be afraid. What, Monday afternoon at the latest I should hear from you, huh? GEEZ there are a lot of variables in the testing. you know where to look. have you seen some of these kids. they are exempt just by thier social skills. know the rules. let them figure it out and both of us will learn our score. I would doubt fixing is what you wanna hear is gonna happen. The consequence is severe and harsh. I 'd rather "drink" at a VISD event than do that.

proudparent, The TEA determines accountability ratings. They will do so in the timely fashion that they do every year. VISD has published preliminary results (which we do every year) and the information is available. I have posted the TEA website. I have also already responded to your questions, so please see the prior post this morning. Tami Keeling
