KEELING on the ISSUES

I’m Tami Keeling

I’m running for re-election to the VISD school board, place 5.

I have the time to commit to this type of community service and give it the attention it deserves.  It has been my privilege to serve you over the last three years.  I have the experience, training and dedication to follow through on the bond and the continued improvement of our public school system.

Two very important issues face the school board.

How will VISD spend your $159 million?

My view is that we must build and repair schools first.  I pledge to be fiscally responsible and openly communicative with all constituents in this regard and to make decisions that will insure that VISD reaches the goals and educational successes that our community seeks.

Buildings alone aren’t the solution.

I will continue to support competitive pay for our teachers and staff.   I will continue to work with VISD administration to craft programs that will attract the brightest new teachers to the District and that will support and compensate the experienced, tenured educators already within VISD.

It’s time for new solutions to disciplinary issues.  Under Superintendent Bob Moore, the VISD Safe and Secure Learning Environment Committee has been working for the past year on recommendations for changes in the way the district instills and enforces discipline.  These recommendations come from those working in the trenches, including administrators and teachers who deal with these issues daily.

My opponent thinks the current codes of conduct and dress are fine as long as they are enforced.  I disagree.  Our current system is broken; it pits administrators against teachers and lacks real consequences.  Enforcement alone is not the answer.  I support a system that puts all our administrators and teachers on the same team, with clear guidelines and consequences.  I will work to give campus administrators and teachers the tools they need, including recommended changes to VISD codes of student conduct and dress.  A safe and productive learning environment for our children must remain a top priority, and we need these changes to see improved results.

Regarding student achievement and preparation. The public school system is an economic cornerstone of our community.  That’s why I serve on the Victoria Education and Business Coalition and work to strengthen relationships between local businesses and VISD.  The HOSTS mentoring program is an excellent example of the business community and VISD working together to improve learning.

I support strong academic paths to college, community college, technical college and the work place.  I am proud to have been a part of the great progress VISD is making in these areas.  I want our students to graduate from VISD with the ability to live their lives as responsible adults, the skills to get a job and the knowledge to pursue their educational dreams beyond high school, whatever those dreams may be.

For the past three years, I have been an impartial voice for positive progress that benefits all students.  It would be my privilege to continue to serve as your trustee.  I ask for you vote on JUNE 14th.

As always, I welcome your input and advice.  Please feel free to contact me.

This is a response to "insanity"---and actually, your pseudonym was chosen prudently, based on your comments.

I am a teacher at MHS and have been one for over 20 years.

About expulsion--If your son was expelled, he was expelled for specific reasons that are outlined in the Student Code of Conduct, a booklet that is distributed and must be signed each year by a parent or guardian.  I suspect that you did, in fact, sign the form and had your child return it to the school.  Did you read it?  Expulsion only takes place under certain, very specific circumstances.

If you read the "Keeling on the Issues" closely, you will notice that Mrs. Keeling is not taking credit for "implementing" the things that she listed; on the contrary, she is pointing out the progress that has been made by the people who are in the trenches (teacher and administrators), and she points out that she is "proud to have been part of the great Visd progress..."

Keeling is for ALL kids!  I have witnessed this.

Keep Keeling!

Did it take you three years to realize that your discipline routines were not effective?  Did you really realize this or are you just along for the ride taking credit for others hard work?  Since 2005, did you support expelling students under a discipline system that was "broken".  Did you send students to Mitchell under a broken system.? If you have so much training and are looking out for all students why did you not intervene when my child was being expelled.   Why has it taken you three years to make recommendations to improve the discipline policies.  Why did you not think it important for teachers and administrators to work together from 2005 to 2008.

Ms. Keeling, you are just spouting out stuff that sounds good to win this election. If you are re-elected, in 2011, I will sit back and try to think about one accomplishment that you made and I won't be able to name one.  I can, however name a lot of mistakes that were made, a lot of students who dropped out of school, a lot of students who were expelled, who dropped out, who flunked out, who were sent to Mitchell and the list goes on.  You can take credit for hiring the superintendent and for passing the bond, but will you also take credit for all the negative?  Every year the number of students enrolled dwindle from 9th to 12trh grade.  This has been happening for years and years.  Did you not think to put in your "multiple pathways" in 2006 when you were on the board for one year.   How can you take credit for multiple pathways.  This community needs to wake up and learn the role of a board member.  You are taking credit for programs and initiatives that you had no part in implementing...How ethical is that?  The only qualification that you have over Dr. Jaynes is 3 years of experience on the board which has given you the terminology to be able to speak "educationese" very well.  I hear a lot of talk and the only actions that I see from you is taking credit from others hard work.  Shame on you!!!

That isthe problem, there is zero discipline and zero consequences with the current board.  Time for change.

discipline controls attitudes. consequences control behavior.
