Religion is personal
I'm so tired of listening to the media persecute Barack Obama because of his pastor's preaching methods and/or what his pastor has to say. In fact, I believe that Rev. Wright is no longer his pastor. But that's not the point. Religion is personal. There was a time people didn't ask each other what religion they were. I was raised Catholic, but by the time I had reached my mid-30s, that religion was changing and I did not care for the changes at all. What made me make that decision was when I received envelopes in the mail from my church with the amount of my Sunday contribution written on them. The sermons were becoming financial reports instead of insightful spiritual lessons. I didn't appreciate the church actually telling me how much money to give them. That should be my choice. I turned away from the Catholic church, and twenty years later I do not call myself a Catholic or a Christian. I consider myself a person with spiritual values based on what I've read in the Bible, including the old and new testaments. The Bible offers great advice, and I don't need someone standing in the pulpit to tell me so. But to condemn someone, politician or not, because of what's being said in the church they attend is just wrong. I just wish the media would drop the whole thing and let Obama campaign as a politician and not as a man who has to defend his former pastor. Besides, until the media calls out McCain on the endorsement he got from that neo-nazi preacher, John Hegee, who openly condemns other churches, I don't think any of this should matter to voters. That being said, I'm personally sick of this whole presidential campaign and how the media has twisted it into a puzzle almost impossible to piece together. Not one of them deserve my vote and I'm not so sure I'll just give it away this time. They can thank the media for that. 7 comments from 6 users

Just another case of the attempted spin being worse than the first charge. Obama's claims that he attend Wright church for 20 years and was not aware of the racist anti White, anti American views of his chosen Pastor is just plain unbelievable. Two conclusions possible, neither very desirable for OB and the Democrats Just another pol who will say anything in an attempt to be elected OR Obama is just plain stupid But considering Obama's very unwise remarks about bitter Americans clinging to God and Guns maybe the second one is correct. posted by

Uh, talk about nonsense. McCain does not attend or is not a member of Hagee's church. And Hagee a neo-nazi? That label fits Wright and Farrakhan. The last thing Hagee is is a anti semtic or anti jew. A study of what Hagee does would be helpful. posted by

Hello Venting, I think there is a quite personal side to religion, but one of our nation's founding principles was the free exercise of religion. Congress opens with a prayer, which our founders purposefully put there so that God would bless this nation, according to Ben Franklin. "In God We Trust" is on our money, Moses and the Ten Commandments, along with other symbols, is on the Supreme Court Building. We also have freedom of speech to express our religious views. Many Democrats were stating a while back earlier in the campaign that the Republicans "don't own God." How true. It seemed that Hillary started talking more about God and the press picked up on it. What happened? Now that one candidate's problems have arisen over religion, the Democrats are struggling with the issue again. The race is not over yet. Obama could well overcome all of this. But I don't look forward to a day when the government or others tell people to keep their religous points of view to themselves. The Reverend Martin Luther King's views on religion helped to bring about the success of the Civil Rights movement. I'm glad he was able to express his points of view based upon religious principles, among others.

I GET TIRED OF ALL THE JUNK OF POLITICS IN GENERAL BUT YES RELIGION IS VERY PERSONAL. AND WHAT OR WHO YOU REPRESENT IN YOUR FAITH SAYS ALOT ABOUT WHAT YOUR MADE OF, YOUR BELIFE SYSTEM, AND WHAT YOU STAND FOR OR WON'T STAND FOR. I I KNEW SOMEONE WHO WAS RUNNING FOR OFFICE WHO WENT TO THE 1ST CHURCH OF SATEN OR WENT REGULARY TO SKIN HEAD MEATINGS AND THAT PERSON WAS KNOWN TO EMBRACE THOSE TYPE OF BELIFES BECAUSE THIS PERSON IS RUNNING FOR AN OFFICE THAT REPRESENTS ME ; I BECOMES EVEN MORE PERSONAL TO ME. IF THAT PERSON CAMPAINS TO BE A PUBLIC SERVANT HIS PERSAL LIFE BECOMES VERY PUBLIC AS IT SHOULD BECAUSE I DON'T WANT SOME NUT SAYING HE'S GOING TO SERV ME; THE PUBLIC IF HE'S MAKING PRIVATE SIDE DEALS TO SET ME UP AS A SACRIFICE AT THE 1ST CHURCH OF SATEN OR LIKE HITLER HE HAD A FEW "PERSONAL" BELIFES THAT ALMOST TOOK OUT HIS WHOLE COUNTRY ALONG WITH A THE EXSTERMINATION OF A WHOLE RACE. SO IF HE'S SAYS ONE THING TO GET MY VOTE AND IN PRIVATE HE'S GETTING WITH THOSE HE SEEKS COUNCILE IN AND GETS RECEIVES ADVICE THAT SAYS DAMN AMERICA, GET THE WHITE MAN BECAUSE THEYVE GOT TO US FOR TO LONG I'M GOING TO QUESTION IF HE HAS MY BEST INTREST AT HEART.
