amber - > Teen Thoughts -> Why So Much Controversy?
Why So Much Controversy?

I've heard so much crap about this Miley Cyrus photo in Vanity Fair. I'm so sick of everyone saying bad things and pointing out the cons of the photo. Here's what I think.

1) At least she's not going commando like Britney

2) She's not pregnant like Jamie Lynn is.

3) She acts nothing like the Spears' family.

What I'm leading to is How can people say she's the next Britney Spears? Maybe how famous she's becoming is kinda close to how famous Britney was...... But as far as actions go she's nothing like Britney or Jamie Lynn. People just want something to talk about is what this is..... If she were going swimming she would be wearing a bathing suit and showing a heck of a lot more skin than in the Vanity Fair photo. Miley at least has a better attitude and acts more grown up than the people critizing her photo. Just because Britney is actually becoming something again everyone needs a new trashy icon to talk about and unfortunately Miley is the next rising music/acting star and that sucks for her. Just leave her alone.

I agree with Grifter on this one..... Whats really frigging sad is that People think the worst of the photo. For all we know she could be wearing an adhesive bra or something under it. Our society just thinks things are usually 'dirty' when they see a picture like that. I mean like if it was some 15 year old stranger that no one knew the freaking name of would anyone have made such a big freaking deal of it? Honestly answer that. You can't honestly say you would be this freaking upset with the person or people who took the freaking photo.

Here's something for everyone to think about.....

If Miley went to the beach and was having fun in the water in a bikini and some dude was with her and she was laughing what would be the story in the mags then???? Here's a hint

Miley Supports Racy Photo- read more on pg --         ;

Does that sound familiar? It's the same freaking crap everyday. If a star is having fun at the beach with someone of the opposite sex beside them or if they are having fun with them the papz usually report a bad story. Watch PopFiction sometime you'll get how bad things seem but are actually nothing compared to some things. I watched one on Avril Lavigne where she wore a pretend baby bump that was barely noticeable and she had said nothing to the papz and the next day there were at least 4 stories of the baby rumor being true about Avril. That's what I mean.......  Look up PopFiction - Avril Lavigne on youtube sometime.

I think we would all be surprised at how many models in magazines and on TV are under the age of 18 yet they appear in very suggestive poses, clothing and commercials and nothing is said about them because they are not Miley Cyrus are known by name they are just nameless people going about their lives and no one says a thing.

A 15 year old in a bikini at the beach or swimming pool isn't necessarily sexualized....unless you're a genuine perv. It's just a teenager having a good time. Measuring square inches of skin is beside the point-- it ain't what's showing, its how you show it, as any woman can tell you.

Don't try to tell me that picture isn't very suggestive. The satin sheet, the mussed up hair, the lighting, no top....don't try to say that isn't a very suggestive image, far more so than a snapshot of her at the beach would be. It's all about context and we all know what that context is. Put it another way....if that was, say, Scarlett Johanssen wrapped topless in a bedsheet with untamed hair, we'd all know what we were supposed to be thinking about. And none of us men would feel the slightest bit of compunction about it. But it's a fifteen year old girl, so the image is really disconcerting. In response, many folks will simply deny the true intent of the image just to avoid dealing with the obvious.

So it's a very sexualized image and one that frankly makes me uncomfortable. It communicates some strange tensions in our society--- we're ready to crucify the FLDS for marrying 15 year olds and having sex, but a major magazine can print a picture of an underage pop starlet like that. It's a very mixed signal, and one that belies how sexualized our society haa allowed our teenagers to become, despite our hysterical reaction to pedophiles.

In her particular circumstance, it's all part of the need to walk a thin line. Miley was not selected to be the next tween craze soley by virtue of being a talented performer. Her physical attractiveness is a big part of the equation. She has to portray a certain image to her young fans, and part of that image is being attractive and desirable to the opposite sex. On her show, it's easy to keep that element in its proper context by making sure she only interacts with boys her age and in certain situations. But this did cross over a certain line. She's appearing in a magazine tailored to grownups, known for racy images, and is in a situation no father would want his 15 year old to be photographed in. That's why her parents/managers are having such a strong reaction. What's amazing is that they couldn't figure out what was going on during the shoot.

It's nice to see a young person with talent who is proud of where she comes from, proud of her father and family, and who doesn't want to offend her fans. I'm not a big Hannah Montana fan, but I admire Miley Cyrus for being truer to herself than, say, the Hilton-Spears-Lohan wannabes.

Amber, I couldn't agree more. It's like we build these celebrities up specifically for the purpose of knocking them down and knocking them down hard.
