Calling All Weather Buffs
If you've got an interest in the weather and would like to make a difference, now is your chance.
The National Weather Service office in Corpus Christi is looking for a least 100 volunteers to record rainfall in its forecast area from Victoria to Kingsville and west to the border. Warning Coordination Meteorologist John Metz with the weather service said the network already has 65 volunteers. The weather service will supply official, free rain gauges while the supply lasts. These gauges typically sell for $20 or more. In return, volunteers are asked to report rainfall by Internet to a national network each day at about 7 a.m. The information will be used to develop drought and flood forecasts. You can contact Metz or Tony Merriman at 361-289-0959 extension 1 for details. Further information is available in the weather service newsletter South Texas Weather Journal. 2 comments from 2 users

I think they will take the report at any time. But they prefer it at about 7 a.m. because that gives them time to input the rainfall totals into the computer used by the river forecast center, which tries to get its flood forecasts out by noon. posted by

Hi Dave,
Sounds Interesting but do you have to report your rainfall @ 7AM thats pretty early alot of us late night people wont be up that early do you happen to know more about the reporting rules the NWS may get more volunteers if they move up the reporting time to whenever once a day instead of 7am dont you think?
