Warm, Dry Winter Still on Tap

Don't expect to see many bouts this winter of rainy cold spells like the one over the Thanksgiving weekend.
The government's final winter weather outlook is out and forecasters are still calling for it to be drier and warmer than normal.
La Nina, that pesky Pacific Ocean current, strengthened in October, reinforcing the earlier forecasts of a dry and warm winter for South Texas.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts there's a greater than 60-percent chance the average temperature this winter will be above normal. It's also predicting a greater than 50-percent chance the season will be drier than normal.
Victoria's average rainfall for the winter is nearly 7 inches, according to the National Weather Service. The average temperature ranges from 53 degrees in January to 57 degrees in February.

Well that's just GREAT! No, seriously........I am a native Texan, and though I'll pray for a couple of freak back to back Canadian blasts with an overrunning gulf or pacific low to surprise us all with enough white stuff for a couple of days to ski down closed overpasses, truth of the matter is that I look forward to warm Texas winters, and having the dogwoods blossom the first week in February. I live to ski from Christmas through Easter......but I know where the snow lives, and I'm content to drive out to N.M. for that and come home to bicycle/kayak weekends. Thanksgiving weekend was just a bit over the mark for cold & wet in my book! I like it just cold enough on occasion foor the mosquitoes to die off and the banana trees to live on............

David,

Thought you might enjoy this viewpoint on the coming winter weather:

ALREADY LATE FALL AND THE INDIANS ON A REMOTE RESERVATION IN SOUTH DAKOTA

ASKED THEIR NEW CHIEF IF THE COMING WINTER WAS GOING TO BE COLD OR
    MILD.

SINCE HE WAS A CHIEF IN A MODERN SOCIETY HE HAD NEVER BEEN TAUGHT THE

OLD SECRETS. WHEN HE LOOKED AT THE SKY HE COULDN'T TELL WHAT THE WINTER

    WAS GOING TO BE LIKE.

NEVERTHELESS, TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE, HE TOLD HIS TRIBE THAT THE

WINTER WAS INDEED GOING TO BE COLD AND THAT THE MEMBERS

OF THE VILLAGE SHOULD COLLECT FIREWOOD TO BE PREPARED.

BUT BEING A PRACTICAL LEADER, AFTER SEVERAL DAYS HE GOT AN IDEA. HE

WENT TO THE PHONE BOOTH, CALLED THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AND

ASKED, "IS THE COMING WINTER GOING TO BE COLD?"

"IT LOOKS LIKE THIS WINTER IS GOING TO BE QUITE COLD," THE

METEOROLOGIST AT THE WEATHER SERVICE RESPONDED.

SO THE CHIEF WENT BACK TO HIS PEOPLE AND TOLD TH EM TO COLLECT EVEN

MOR E FIREWOOD IN ORDER TO BE PREPARED.

A WEEK LATER HE CALLED THE NATIONAL

    WEATHER SERVICE AGAIN. "DOES IT

STILL LOOK LIKE IT IS GOING TO BE A VERY

    COLD WINTER?"

"YES," THE MAN AT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AGAIN REPLIED,

"IT'S GOING TO BE A VERY COLD WINTER."

THE CHIEF AGAIN WENT BACK TO

HIS PEOPLE AND ORDERED THEM TO COLLECT

EVERY SCRAP OF FIREWOOD THEY COULD FIND.

TWO WEEKS LATER THE CHIEF CALLED THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AGAIN.

"ARE YOU ABSOLUTELY SURE THAT THE WINTER IS GOING TO BE VERY

     COLD?"

"ABSOLUTELY," THE MAN REPLIED. "IT'S LOOKING MORE AND MORE LIKE

IT IS GOING TO BE ONE OF THE COLDEST WINTERS WE'VE EVER SEEN."

"HOW CAN YOU BE SO SURE?" THE CHIEF ASKED.

THE WEATHERMAN REPLIED, "THE INDIANS ARE COLLECTING FIREWOOD LIKE

    CRAZY."
