This summer's start earliest since 1896
Unless you live under a rock, you’re probably aware last Friday was the first day of summer.
What you probably didn’t hear was that is the earliest summer solstice since 1896. Summer typically starts on June 21, but this year it began on June 20.
The simple explanation is because 2008 is a leap year. For a full explanation, check out this Earth & Sky article.

I remember being awed the first time I saw the cacti in New Mexico. What a sight!

Wow what a gorgeous picture. I remember going to southern Arizona and being astounded by the size and various shapes of the saguaro cacti. What a lovely sight. I also love the Joshua trees in the Mohave desert. I miss going out West; it's been too long since I've taken that road trip. Without my mom along for the ride, it just doesn't seem the same. Maybe why I haven't left Texas in several years now. Thanks for the solstice info, dtewes.
