Dallas Cowboys: Criminal Behavior
The 'D' in Big D could very well stand for detainee. Tank Johnson is solidifying that. And you thought Victoria has had a string of bad press. When Johnson plays his first snap as a Cowboy against the NY Giants on Sunday, he'll join a growing list of Cowboys who have had run-ins with the law. Big D has been blitzed by allegations and charges against its players: from Michael Irvin and Erik Williams, to Nate Newton and Keith Davis. I don't think Roy Williams has ever been charged with under-performing, but I'm looking into it. While other clubs (the Cincinnati Bengals of late) and other leagues (the NBA is right up there) have had their share of negative publicity, the Cowboys always keep their hat in that contest. Or at least the team gets stained with that stigma. Johnson, a big run-stopping nose tackle, was released by the Bears on June 25 after being pulled over in Arizona. "He already had served a two-month jail term for a gun charge and been suspended by the NFL for violating the league's personal conduct policy," The Associated Press reported. Of course, players from all over the league -- and across sports -- have been charged or prosecuted as criminals. Ray Lewis, Michael Vick, Tonya Harding and a long list of thugs who play in the NBA can attest to that. Why can't Dallas keep its nose clean? As America's Team, wouldn't it be best to keep more guys like Tony Romo, Demarcus Ware and Emmitt Smith and fewer guys like Johnson? I'd rather root for a guy who's accused of dating Brittany Spears than a guy out of jail on gun charges. I do believe everyone deserves a second chance -- maybe even a third. Jerry Jones has run out of chances, though. 5 comments from 5 users

First of all: Tank Johnson has been charged with not having a gun owner identification card after six firearms were found at his home. He has a history of gun-related offenses, including further charges of unlawfully having other weapons in his automobile. He broke the law in Illinois. He may have been OK had he been living in Texas, but he didn't live in Texas at the time of the charges. HERE'S FROM ESPN.COM: "Unless specifically exempted by statute, all Illinois residents who buy or possess firearms are required by law to have a valid Firearm Owner's Identification card. They are issued by the Illinois State Police. "In November 2005, Johnson was sentenced to 18 months probation and 40 hours' community service after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor gun charge. He was arrested earlier in 2005 after a nightclub valet reported seeing Johnson with a handgun in his sport utility vehicle. "Johnson also was arrested last February after a confrontation outside a Chicago nightclub, but the charges were dropped after the police officer he allegedly scuffled with decided not to continue the prosecution." The whole point of this blog is that the Cowboys have suited and played alleged and convicted criminals -- not that people don't have the right to bare arms. I believe in the right to bare arms (so long as that law somehow precludes Advocate reporter David Tewes from having anything but a water pistol.) posted by

The guy was arrested for having a gun in his car in a state that doesn't allow it, in Texas it would never even been an issue. Come on--give us a break.
