Come out, come out whoever you are
Here are parts of an article from the Washington Post concerning anonymous writers By TOM GRUBISICH The Washington Post "These days we want "transparency" in all institutions, even private ones. There's one massive exception — the Internet. It is, we are told, a giant town hall. Indeed, it has millions of people speaking out in millions of online forums. But most of them are wearing the equivalent of paper bags over their heads. We know them only by their Internet "handles" — gotalife, runningwithscissors, stoptheplanet and myriad other inventive names. Imagine going to a meeting about school overcrowding in your community. Everybody at the meeting is wearing nametags. You approach a cluster of people where one man is loudly complaining about waste in school spending. "Get rid of the bureaucrats, and then you'll have money to expand the school," he says, shaking his finger at the surrounding faces. You notice his nametag — "anticrat424." Between his sentences, you interject, "Excuse me, who are you?" He gives you a narrowing look. "Taking names, huh? Going to sic the superintendent's police on me? Hah!" In any community in America, if Mr. anticrat424 refused to identify himself, he would be ignored and frozen out of the civic problem-solving process. But on the Internet, Mr. anticrat424 is continually elevated to the podium, where he can have his angriest thoughts amplified through cyberspace as often as he wishes. He can call people the vilest names and that hate-mongering, too, will be amplified for all the world to see." I wonder if the now anonymous posters on here would be as brave and brash with their libelous postings if they were required to identify themselves. I would think that anyone who proudly proclaims themselves a "Biased Democrat" and ALWAYS automatically votes the straight Dem party ticket would also be proud to be identified as such a Party Loyalist. But we will never know will we? Because few have the guts to say in public what they now shout from the anonymous darkness.

So pat you are afraid to say in public what you post anonymously? You are like the "anticrat" I mention in my message Would you repeat to Gov Palin in person the insults you write about her on here?

Mark: You already have my name. You already have Mike's name. Who in the world are you talking about? Why in heaven's name would you need more than a 1st name to have a discussion on any internet forum? I'll tell you why I don't post my full name. I don't want crackpots calling me after they've read one of my posts that they've disagreed with. Somebody told me one time, "That is just a cop out. You have caller ID so you can see who is calling. If you don't recognize the name, don't answer the phone." Now there is a really genius idea! I have an elderly mother, other elderly family members, children and grandchildren. Do you think I might know at any given time who might have to get in touch with me for one of them. I'm not willing to take the chance on missing that call. I get enough of the "unknown caller" calls (which I never answer). I don't need people who disagree with something I said in an internet post calling me. #1 Nobody is going to change who I am or what I stand for. I've got a whole family full of Republicans that have tried for 48 years and have not succeeded. I love everyone of them to pieces (misguided though they be), but I am not about to put up with some yahoo on the internet calling my house and trying to argue with me. I'm wondering if you have school-aged children. If so, do you have a fit over the 99% of teachers who do not have published phone numbers? There are probably only 2 things I've ever agreed with southtexas on: Steve Tyler and this. Get a life and get a grip. You can call me Pat. I'm not sure how Mike wants to be addressed, but probably just civilly. P. S. I had no problem knowing you by a screen name or by just Mark if you so chose. posted by
