Media reports out of the Dallas area say Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones was involved in a physical confrontation with his bodyguard Tuesday night at a Dallas hotel. No arrests were made and no charges were filed, according to the reports. This is not good news for Jones or the Cowboys. Jones was suspended from the NFL last year for numerous problems related to his conduct. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones acquired Adam Jones in a trade with the Titans and he was later reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goddell. Goddell made it clear that Adam Jones was walking a thin line. Supposedly, Jerry Jones had recently warned Adam Jones about being too visible. The Cowboys sent the Titans a fourth-round pick for Adam Jones and would get the pick back if he were to be suspended. But the damage to the Cowboys, who are struggling in the secondary and have been playing without injured cornerback Terrence Newman, would be immense. Jones played well in last Sunday's win over the Bengals. Quite a few people will say the Cowboys are going to get what's coming to them. Ironically, Goddell visited Valley Ranch on Wednesday. Adam Jones may escape a suspension for what supposedly happened Tuesday night, but the Cowboys and their fans have reason to wonder for how long.
Rice Consolidated and Hallettsville put on an entertaining performance in their District 26-2A game. Rice Consolidated won 19-13 in double overtime. The Raiders had been shut out for before tying the game in the fourth quarter. Neither team scored in the first overtime. Rice Consolidated running back Zaccheaeus Foster was the difference. He rushed for 202 yards on 28 carries. He scored on a 3-yard run in the fourth quarter and scored the game-winning touchdown on a 21-yard run. Foster rushed for 146 yards in the fourth quarter and the overtimes. He's strong, fast and makes excellent moves. Both defenses played well. Rice Consolidated is extremely quick. They do a good job of closing holes and tackling. Hallettsville had a good game plan, but sometimes great athletes are hard to stop. The night was not a total loss for Hallettsville coach Rick Masek. His daughter, Jenna, was named homecoming queen. Rice Consolidated improved to 2-0 in district, while Hallettsville lost its district opener. Schulenburg and Weimar are also 2-0. Weimar stunned East Bernard, dropping the Brahmas to 0-2. The race for the three playoff spots should be very interesting.
Refugio and Industrial went to the fourth quarter of their game in Refugio tied at 18. Refugio, ranked No. 4 in the state, went on to win 32-15, but both teams can take away positives from the game. Refugio got the win and upped its record to 4-0. The Bobcats are young at the skill positions and seem to be getting better in every game. Their running game has really improved and Terrence Smith topped the 100-yard mark against Industrial. The passing game produced over 200 yards and will improve when quarterbacks Kyle Hendley, a junior, and Aaron Perez, a sophomore, get better at reading defenses, which will come with experience. Industrial is a young team that shows a lot of promise. Matt Anderson is the real deal at running back and sophomore quarterback Austin Smalley shows promise. If the Cobras can improve in the passing game, they will be a difficult team to stop.
Bay City and Cuero produced another outstanding game at Cuero's Gobbler Stadium. Cuero won 26-21, avenging last year's 29-21 loss in Bay City. The Gobblers ralled to score the winning touchdown with 22 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and extended their home winning streak to 26 games. The Bay City defense put tremendous pressure on Cuero quarterback Tyler Arndt, sacking him twice. But Arndt responded by completing 25 of 38 passes for 253 yards and one touchdown. Arndt made some incredible throws in leading Cuero to touchdowns on its final two drives. The Gobblers got other big plays from Jennings Boothe, who caused and recovered the fumble that led to the game-winning drive and a blocked punt by Andrew Thibodeaux that led to Cuero's first touchdown and interceptions by Jake Rangnow and Isiah Glover. Bay City recovered two Cuero fumbles and junior Le'Tevin Wilcox rushed for 133 yards and scored on runs of 1 and 55 yards. Bay City coach Robert Blackmon and Cuero coach Mark Reeve had their teams well prepared and they will benefit from this game. The teams will play again next season in Bay City.
I'm going through a serious case of Friday night football withdrawl. I've been covering high school football for so long that even after the season I have a hard time getting to sleep before 4 a.m. on Saturday morning. The athletic directors and head coaches made the right decision to cancel the games because of the threat of Hurricane Ike, but it still feels weird not being at a game on Friday night. Hopefully, the storm won't do much damage and football will return next week.
High school football is back. Friday nights in Texas during football season are special. Driving to the game, eating out, seeing the stadium lights are unique experiences. I'll be heading to Cuero on Friday night for the Beeville-Cuero game. It should be a great game and one of many. Hopefully, this will be fhe first of many games from now until almost Christmas. It's crazy, it's fun and it's unlike anything else. Enjoy.
The Texas Rangers have got to be making Nolan Ryan's life miserable. All the Hall of Famer, who is now the Rangers president, can do is watch as his pitching staff continues to self-destruct. The Rangers were torched for 19 runs on Tuesday night in Boston and the Red Sox came back to score eight on Wednesday night. Texas spotted Boston a 10-0 first-inning lead on Tuesday night, including a pair of three-run home runs by David Ortiz and still managed to come back and take the lead. The Rangers offense is that good. But it's pitching staff is so bad, it gave the lead up. Texas has fallen out of the Wild Card race, even though it was pretty clear it was never really in it. It's difficult to watch the pitching collapse night after night and GM Jon Daniels, who has made some less than favorable trades involving pitchers, had better do something about it. Texas has some outstanding young players such as Michael Young, Ian Kinsler and Josh Hamilton, who is worth the price of a ticket. But it won't matter if the Rangers don't find some pitching. Nolan Ryan can't get back on the mound, but the Rangers need to find someone who can.
A University of Texas employee has admitted posting a bogus newspaper story on a Internet message board saying two University of Oklahoma quarterbacks had been arrested on drug charges. The employee, who said he is a Nebraska fan, wrote and posted the false story on a template from The Oklahoman, Oklahoma City's daily newspaper, The employee said he wrote the false story because he was upset by deragatory comments about Nebraska from Oklahoma fans on a Nebraska message board. The University of Texas investigated the posting and found it did not occur on university equipment or time so it will not penalize the employee. However, the father of one of the Oklahoma quarterbacks mentioned in the false story said he plans to pursue legal action. This is a painful reminder of the misue of free expression on the Internet. It behooves us to check facts and beware.
.I lost a good friend and Victoria lost a special person last week. Helen Stockton passed away at the age of 90 on Thursday, I was priviliged to serve as a pallbearer in her funeral on Sunday. I used to swim laps with Helen for a number of years at the YMCA pool. I always enjoyed visiting with Helen and she always kept me posted on her family. Helen's husband, Gene, passed away last year. They were married for 72 years. I want wish her family the best through this difficult time and I will remember Helen fondly.
If you happen to see a member of Jerheme Urban's family, be sure and say thank you. Urban attended high school at Stroman went on to play college football at Trinity University in San Antonio and is now playing wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals. Urban traveled to Victoria from his San Antonio home on Saturday to hold a free football camp for high school receivers and quarterbacks. The camp was tremendous, even in the 100-degree heat. There were at least a dozen instructors and those who attended get hands-on instruction from high school coaches and former teammates of Urban at Trinity. It didn't cost the athletes a penny, thanks to the generosity of Urban and his sponsors. The campers got lunch and a T-shirt along with their instruction. Nathanael Hasselbeck, who played football at Boston College and is the brother of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, worked the camp and was right on when he pointed out how few professional athletes give back to their community like Urban and how lucky the campers were to get such expert instruction. Urban hopes to make the camp an annual event and held out the possibility of expanding it in the future. Urban overcame long odds to make the NFL from a Division III school. There's no doubt he's a great athlete, but he's also proven to be an outstanding person.
