Jones out at La Marque

Former Refugio athletic director and head football coach Chris Jones has resigned as athletic director and head football coach at La Marque.

Jones was at La Marque for one season. The Cougars had a 9-3 record and defeated El Campo in the Class 4A, Division II bi-district playoffs before losing to Lumberton in the area round. It was only the second time since 1992 that La Marque had failed to advance beyond the second round.

Jones said he wanted to move closer to his wife's family in West Texas. But there's no doubt La Marque is an extremely tough place to coach. The talent level is high but so are the expectations.

A signal of Jones' intentions may have emerged when La Marque assistant Charlie McMath, formerly the athletic director and head football coach at Woodsboro, became the lone finalist for the Fort Worth Brewer job.

No word on what the future holds for Joe Richard Castellano. Castellano played and coached at Refugio before becoming Jones' defensive coordinator at La Marque.
