when did our prisons turn into hotels?
I have been thinking on the subject of why criminals don't fear going to prison anymore like in the old days? When a criminal is sentenced to jail time they usually smile and don't care at all. The prison system today is down right corrupt, they get 3 lavish meals a day, t.v. time, recreational time outside, and all the necessities that are usually provided by a hotels concierge service if you forget something.  If one who committed a hanice crime got to spend 5-10 years in this lap of luxury then sign me up too. I cam upon an article of a Sherriff in Phoenix, Arizona who is dubbed the "Toughest Sherriff in America" and I was astonshied with the way he runs his jail, its like stepping back into the 50's where people don't want to go to jail and when they do they hate every minute of it. The Sherriff enacted a "get-tough-on-crime" policy and it seems to be working. He has required chain gangs and the only "woman" chain gang ever, he saves his community thousands of dollars of service that the prisoners handle such as cleaning streets, painting over graffiti, and aslo burying the deceades indigents in the county's field. The women are actually volunteering to be on the gangs because their other option is to be on total lockdown which means 4 women to an 8 by 12 foot cell for 23 hours a day. The prisoners are back to the past while wearing the old fashioned black and white striped uniforms, but they all have to wear pink underwear(even the men) and when the gangs are out they wear pink sweaters that plainy state "PRISONER" on the front and back. I would have to think that my favorite quote by this sherriff is "Jails are not country clubs," by this he means there is no smoking, coffee, salt, pepper, or ketchup allowed. All reading materials and time are monitored and there are no movies, television, and/or recreational time whatsoever. If a prisoner should have to see a nurse for any reason they have to pay $10.00 for this privilege. Some people may say that this is inhumane how he is treating the prisoners, but I agrree with the Sherriff when a criminal was complaining of how unsatisfied of his treatment he was, the Sherriff told him "Well, maybe this will teach you not to come back !!!"

I read about this guy, I think he's a genius!  I've never been to prison, but my cousin has and he told me "it's not that bad".  My cousin liked the fact that he had a place to sleep every night, food to eat, and he even got to lounge around, all without working to earn any wages to pay for these things!  The prison system needs to buckle down and have stricter policies, treat the inmates like the criminals that they are.

I think rehabilitation centers are for people who need rehab, and prisons are for people who are criminals. TRUE, very true sarah! miss ya! It's sickening how criminals usually smile now more than ever once they know they will be going to jail, and hey - you also forgot to mention they get to have sex in some prisons as well; I'd say that's more like an X-rated motel.
