Chinese Navy Confronted USS Kitty Hawk

A Chinese attack submarine and destroyer confronted the U.S. carrier Kitty Hawk and its battle group in the Taiwan Strait, sparking a tense 28-hour standoff that brought both sides to a battle-ready position.

The American ships were heading to Japan following China’s sudden cancellation of a scheduled Thanksgiving port call in Hong Kong when they encountered the Chinese vessels, according to the Navy Times, which cited a report in a Chinese-language newspaper in Taiwan.

You know there are times when you must laugh to keep from crying. We are having to borrow 3 Billion Dollars a day from the Chinese to fight this ill advised War in Iraq. I am sure the interest alone is enough to buy a couple of the Emirates in the Persian Gulf.

I fear sooner than later we are going to be at military odds with China. I mean if it is not over Iran then possibly Taiwan. This is just more of the same Foreign Policy madness Dr. Paul rails against on a daily basis.

I agree.. China is a big problem that we will have to face at some point. I don't see it happening anytime in the next ten years. As long as trade is strong between us and them. The problem there is they are taking the money and buying weapons.

The next space race will be between the US and China. So far, I'm afraid to say they are on track to beat us. China is in a better position then the USSR was during the cold war.. They have an economy that can sustain their military spending.

This is the Song Class Sub that shadowed and then surfaced about 5 nm from Kitty Hawk.

It is a new improved Diesel/Electric boat that blends Chinese and western technology.

Diesel/Electric boats, even non-western boats such as the Kilo class being exported by Russia are notoriously quiet and difficult to detect.  They do not have the circulation pump noise that is generated and necessary on Nuclear boats.

I call myself CG-23 Sailor but my last year in the Navy I was crew aboard CV-63 USS Kitty Hawk. This is no suprise that a Song, or any other D/E Sub got so close. especially since we were not on any sort of alert. Just routine steaming from port-to-port.

This is the Destroyer that was acompanying the Sub. The Shenzen, a Luhai class Destroyer.

the C-801/802 Missiles that this shhip carries is the first generation SSM's that china developed using western technology. as such it is far more dangerous than the older Silkworm missiles used previously, however this is to say the missile is about the equivalent of a 1970's vintage US Harpoon missile. The Harpoon is still the standard we use today but vastly upgraded in buth range, warhead, and guidance systems.

As a former EW in the USN, I can say that these missiles do not worry me if fired on us in an alerted attack. but as I pointed out previously, an un-alerted suprise attack can be devestating. even with outdated weapons. the only difference in SSM missiles used by the Song Sub is that they are encapsulated for submerged launch. otherwise they are the exact same C-802 missiles the Shenzen carries.
