Helpful government
Government from local to national is deciding what is "best" for us. California wants to put remote control thermostats in homes because the government knows best. California has decided that children cannot be home schooled unless the parent has a teaching certificate because the government knows best. Mississippi has a bill pending in the legislature that fat people (as defined by the state) cannot be served in restaurants because the government knows best. Texas tells people they cannot play eight liner machines that pay out too much because the government knows best. The United States government tells us what time it is because the government knows best. I'm tired of the government telling me what is best. I want to return to the days when I was allowed to decide for myself what is best.

Somali pirates have captured another ship, this time a chemical tanker, in the Gulf of Aden/Indian Ocean area southwest of the Persian Gulf.  It is reported that there were there British security people on board and they jumped into the sea and were rescued by a French vessel.  The security people jumped overboard when the pirates took the ship????  Well, yeah.  You see, they were not armed.  Now, I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I know that there are few things more useless than an UNARMED security guard.  If the ships carried automatic small arms and 20mm cannon mounted on the bridge wings, the pirates with their speedboats won't get within a quarter of a mile of a ship thus armed.  The AP reports that 40 ships have been hijcked this year out of 97 attacked.  Fifteen ships with about 300 crew members are still being held hostage including a 300 thousand ton oil tanker.  The question I have never seen answered is HOW THE HELL can the pirates board a ship under way on the high seas from a speedboat.  The decks of ships are from 30 to almost a hundred feet above the water.  How do the thugs get on board to take over the ship?

I see that "researchers" are calling for bans on fast food advertising on television to in order to make fat kids thin again.  This, like the ban on tobacco advertising, is in direct contradiction of the First Amendment.

"Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press..."

It seems pretty clear to me.  Unlike the Second, there is no qualifying clause to muddy the meaning.  If parents don't want their kids eating fast food, it should be the parents who put a stop to it.

If  there was a group of "researchers" who wanted to prohibit people from going to church, you would see Baptists, Catholics, Jews, and Muslims standing shoulder to shoulder, each holding up the Constitution and protesting that their First Amendment rights were being threatened.  Why don't we see people standing up for the freedom of speech and press the way they would for freedom of religion?

... on the airport control tower and its impact on local operations.  I contend that the money spent to put the tower into operation and staff it was wasted.  For a half-century VCT was controlled out of Houston Center and there were no accidents due to a lack of local controllers.  Therefore, safety wasn't the reason to open the tower.  It doesn't open until after the first commercial flight of the day departs and it closes prior to the last commercial arrival, leaving it available for only one commercial turn a day.  I'd be willing to wager a Whopper to a Big Mac that there are seldom more than 40 private/corporate flight operations a day.  For this we need a multi-million dollar control tower and the people to man it?  The emplanements are down from last year, so it doesn't seem that people are more willing to travel from VCT now that the tower is in operation.

I like the fact that the manager is cleaning up the airport property to make it more appealing to people wanting to locate a business there.  That's a good thing.

I would hate to see Victoria lose commercial air service, but Continental cannot afford to send a half-dozen flights a day down here if there's not going to be anyone on them.  Times are hard for all airlines and money losing routes are very much in jeopardy.

Okay, I read the proposed comics this morning.  With the exception of Luann, I had never heard of any of them.  Were these actually the most recomended strips by your readers in the poll?  About the best that I can say for most of them is that they make Mutts look good.  I didn't think THAT was possible.  Sigh...Oh, well, I can still read the Chronicle comics on-line.
