Busy

I think my old school vicad blogging peer Mike Austin (Pilot) put it best when he mentioned the new "Myspacce" version of the advocate blogs. For the life of me, I was trying to place what was feeling different to me.about this whole site. When I first became a contributer to the Vicad blogs, quite honestly, I think my introductory email to the online powers that be, was that this would be the closest to a columnist for the Advocate as I would ever get, and I was quite proud when they gave me a little spot to call my own that even on occasion got to see print.

Now... it's a little different. You don't have to email anyone about your interest. You can kind of just open an account and start posting. While that is great for most people, I get the feeling that the whole "hip, cool, social networking of the Crossroads scene" may be a little out of my league. You see, I'm not much of a hip, cool, person. I like nerdy things, Idon't compromise much, and quite frankly I think I may be a bit of a jerk. This makes for great biased stories, articles, blogs and wonderful record reviews, but as a social networker... yeesh.

So while I am still trying to adjust to my former elitist ways and be a team player here, I need to find something that will help me establish myself as a contributor. I wrote a few days ago about my oppurtunity to write for a new up and coming website dedicated to video games. I recently got word that everything is good to go and am currently being brought on staff to write and give them random stories and accounts of my nerdiness. This is awesome because I get to establish myself as a staff member of something and try to fake my way as a member of the press to get me some decent interviews that I was lining up to do for other projects.

Hi guys -

I'm just getting back to some of the posts made while I was out.  I've noticed several of our original bloggers voicing complaints about changing the site without any contact from us.  I'm sorry that happened to you, but that was definately not our intention.  I just talked to one of our developers and he confirmed that he sent several emails to the list of email addresses for our bloggers.  He only recieved two responses acknowledging the email and accepting our invitation to participate in a beta program (this was a couple of months back).  Spam filter, bad email addresses... anybody's guess why you didn't recieve an email.  I guess he just figured no one else was interested.

My apoligies that you didn't know this was coming.  We certainly could have done a better job of letting you know about this and we'll keep that in mind in the future.  Again, I'm sorry!

I also recognize the "needle in a haystack" concern that I've heard a couple of times.  We are considering various ways to address that issue based on what we can do technically given the potporri of technology that drives this site (a long story, but think "patchwork quilt").  The reality is that at the moment we probably aren't going to change things for several weeks.  Our developers worked very hard to get this site launched and now they are focusing on the backlog of other issues that built up during that time.

Thanks for your patience and for all your contributions.  I hope you guys will continue to participate here.

Dan

BTW - I've seen timoi make reference several times to "lost blogs".  Our intent was to migrate over all the past blogs.  Did some specific date range of blogs not make it?

Started a reply to this.....well actually put in a bunch, then the blog server hiccuped again and puked it up and I lost it........I'd like to hear what they think about the original "writers" prior to going in unanounced and turning it into a free for all, needle in a haystack affair. The part that chafed me was that we weren't at least warned of the impenting change and were temporarily locked out. Maybe I'll try to redo the more thoughtful version of this or another post entirely.........But for the moment, I have a job.........roll them dice - come on baby, new shoes for mama!

While I was not a blogger on the old Vic Ad site, I definitely was a long-time reader (being ToniAnne's BFF, as she referred to me, lol), and I, too, miss the "small, close-knit" feeling of the old site.  I've also noticed that the majority of the "old-school" bloggers like yourself, Mike, and the like have all pretty much expressed the same feelings about the new site.  However, I have not seen anyone directly from the Advocate actually address you guys and your feelings.  Or maybe they have in private messages, who knows.  It would be interesting to get their take on what you're saying, though.
