What's in a name?

So I just read an article online from the handy Victoria Advocate website.

There is a petition circling around to give the new high schools the old high school names.

Wha? I don't think consolidation is a good thing, never did, and I was truly suprised when a whole town of people let elected school board members do just that. (But hey, don't blame me, I was raised on MTV and apathy, my generation barely even reads a book, much less registers to vote.)

Before we let everyone off the hook and "go back to the way things were"

Someone answer me one thing no one ever did...

What the heck does memorial high school memorialize? Up to this point, I have to just think we named it after the football field, and let's face it, it's not like there's major tourism outside of football season. Surely we could have done better.

What was this Stroman's special contribution to the community? If the school is not on "Stroman" land, why should another school be named after him/her? Leave the current campus as Stroman.

I know who Stockbauer and Lenz are. As well as the historical DeLeon, Navarro, etc, etc. But who were Ben Jordan and Ben Wilson and why in the hell did the city name two "main drags" as "Bens"?

Tim, I've wondered the same thing: what does Memorial High School memorialize?  It always seemed like a generic name slapped on the school.  For the same reason I don't like VHS East and VHS West either.  I think they should be named after people in the community, or at least after something or someone with some meaning.  I also like regionally-themed mascots - bring on the Chupacabras!

Stroman was the person that donated the land for the school to be built.

I believe Stroman was named after a former VHS tennis coach. It was a person. lol

Who was Stroman, BTW?

East and West would be the least offensive names. And given the knee jerk nature of this community, the best choices.

The idea of Ratcliff and Tyler might be overruled in favor of Welder and O'Connor.

I like the idea of the Chupacabras, and the fan favorite, Puffy Taco for mascots.
