A few years ago, my dad and I went to one of those boxing matches they hold at the community center. The place was pretty excited to see a young boxer from Victoria make his professional debut. After one of the matches was over, my dad excused himself to go get us a couple of beers. During that time, the next match was announced. The place went wild as the boxer from Victoria made his way to the ring. The bell was rung, and before I knew it… The Victorian was on the floor, knocked out. Felt...

I have this friend named Juan, everyone calls him “Buddy”. We met while working and were assigned to work together from our employer at the time, we became great buddies ever since. One of the great things about Buddy is his art of conversation. Within the first few hours of working with him, we knew each other’s life stories, pet peeves, and quirks… It’s one of my quirks that sparked what Buddy calls “The Great Candle Debate of 2003”. You see, I once received...

Instead of writing about the obvious VMAs that your coworkers may be gabbing about... I heard this on a radio ad this morning: "Cingular has exlusive ringtones from artists like Nelly, Missy Elliott, and Hillary Duff." So there you go... 3 reasons not to use Cingular

I used to threaten my friends that one day I would run for public office. My campaign slogan would be "You Could Do Worse".

My wife likes to watch novelas. For those of you not in the know, that’s a Spanish soap opera. Well, she doesn’t like to watch all of them, just one in particular. It’s called La Madrastra, and unlike American soaps with a continuous plot, novelas are only slated to run about 6 months or so. La Madrastra is in it’s final weeks, and I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness to see it go. If you were to ask me what it was about, I would just repeat what my wife tells me is going on. Unlike my...

This story kind of struck me as odd. Seems as though a Belgian Nun was reprimanded for "wild dancing" as she acrobatically danced with a missionary. She states that normally she wouldn't dance like that, but was carried away by the enthusiasm of the group. The full story can be found here Now I'm the first to admit that I don't know a lot of things. I admit that I really don't know what kind of punishment (if any at all) this merits to our Sister Johanne here. I, who spend my days in an...

I had a little free time this weekend, so I decided to watch a little television. (No joke either you should see the size of the second TV in the house.) I was flipping channels, and stopped on a reality TV show. I won’t get too much into my feelings on reality TV, my dear reader. That’s for another time and another blog altogether. Let’s just say that I miss the days of the sitcoms and hour-long dramas, which thankfully seem to be coming our way again in fall. I did find one that kept...

I was born and raised Catholic. Despite what you might think from my ramblings about questioning authority, I find the Catholic religion to be the best thing suited for me since birth. (It's not for lack of looking around either) What puzzles me is why Christians feel the need to argue with each other so much as to which is the "correct" Christian religion. To make matters worse, it's usually among laymen and people who rarely know what they are talking about. I always seem to listen to...

My stepdaughter is starting school today. Kindergarten. Watching her get up this morning, after a summer of sleeping late and not a care in the world brings me back. Sure, it’s “only kindergarten”, but she already knows so much more than I did at her age thanks to pre-k to prepare kids for school. They taught me how to read in first grade, and she already knows her numbers and letters. She practices writing words for fun, and I was shocked when she did a simple word puzzle the...

September 25th is bringing a pretty big show to Corpus Christi. They are calling it the 3rd annual “Blues On The Bay” Festival. The only problem is that it’s not really a blues festival, they have a couple of artists that come close, but shy away. I’ll never consider the headlining band “Black Crowes” to be The Blues… ever. I’m pretty picky about The Blues, got turned onto the genre by a friend who is no longer with us. So every time I hear it, I think about him....

When I first came to Victoria as a youth, I spent 30 minutes in the mall looking for the escalator to get to the second floor. No joke. That pretty much set the standard for my future encounters with the features of this town. Everything just seemed a bit smaller and outdated here. I remember when I found out Victoria had a zoo. I had already been living here about two years. When I asked a friend about it, he told me "We have a bear I think, It's pretty old, I think it's going to die soon."...

I heard a commercial for the new HP Laptop computer this morning. The commercial shows the generation gap between a mother and a teenage daughter. The mom talks about “writing poetry in the quad” while the daughter responds “try publishing the school’s poetry blog” as if that was a hard feat. (I mean c’mon… Even I conned the Advocate into letting me have a soapbox, it really isn’t that hard). The commercial goes on to talk about how the new computer can play...

This was mentioned in the news this morning. Apparently there is a mysterious death following a suspected shoplifter at a Wal Mart... The full story can be found here: http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA... So is the lesson that crime doesn't pay? Or maybe you should size up that door greeter before you try anything rash. For Pete's sake have your receipt handy.

There is a really great book out there for guitar players, musicians, and anyone else looking to improve on what they do by approaching things in an interesting way. It’s called “Zen Guitar” by Phillip Toshio Sudo. It covers guitar playing with philosophical lessons along with the process of becoming a better musician. If you have never explored the philosophy of constantly improving in anything you do, I highly suggest it. It’s got lots of neat lessons and chapters about things...

If you asked me who my favorite songwriter was, I couldn’t give you a straight answer. But in the top 3 most definitely is Tom Waits. If you have never heard of him, don’t be surprised. Tom Waits isn’t exactly the music industry’s darling, but he is admired by most of it’s artists. People don’t necessarily go into a music store and ask for him. He’s like a secret, spread from boyfriend to girlfriend, older sibling to younger sibling, eccentric teacher to student, and weird friend to a kid...

Looks like our president has decided to take a 5 week vacation. How many do they take a year anyway? It just seems odd that recent polls have shown that most Americans are not even able to cash in their vacation time in recent years, and this guy takes 5 weeks... That means for over a month, he's swinging a golf club. I'm sure he brings plenty of advisors and what not with him... just like most people bring along their cell phone or PDA. I just find it sad that most people I know can't...

There’s an urban artist I really don’t care for. His name is Nick Cannon. He has songs with titles like “Feelin Freaky”, “Gigilo” and “Your Pops Don’t Like Me”. I mean if you look up the lyrics for these songs, you won’t exactly find the most thought provoking subject matter, and as a music listener, I don’t identify much with it either. This morning however, I saw a video for his current single called “Can I Live”. It’s a song about his...

It seems that 76 percent of Cuero students grades 6 to 12 admit to drinking alcohol in the past year.(According to a news story that ran last night on your local news) Cuero has a drinking problem. Who knew? I wonder how shocked they would be if they realized that it's not just Cuero that has the problem. Although I'm sure it is confusing to so many people. We have, after all, as a community gotten rid of those pesky physically demanding sports like skateboarding and rollerblading in...

I just realized something… I sleep in on Saturdays. I mean, so what right? I’m 29, and I don’t work on Saturday, so I should be sleeping in. But I used to have a reason to wake up so very early. It was Saturday morning cartoons. In the eighties, when I was a much smaller version of the Smart Alec I am now, my brother and I would wake up just before 7AM and watch anything animated until 10 in the morning with our bowls of sugary cereals. At first I thought I stopped watching cartoons in the...
