BANNED BOOKS WEEK ends today September 30th. It runs every last week of September every year since 1982. The reason for the event according to the American Library Association is to remind Americans not to take democratic freedom for granted.
“BBW celebrates the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one’s opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints...
You know what I like about the Advocate blogs? The writers and the readers seem to be pretty educated people. If they don’t know much about a topic, they confess they don’t and proceed with their opinions… I respect that. I am not by any means a professional of anything, I just happen to like the things I see and do, and comment about them from time to time.
Let’s review…I disagree with Bush on almost everything except for our home state. I disagree with Clinton on his views of fidelity in...
You know what always cracks me up? Commercials. I’m not talking about professional ones either, although some ad campaigns are truly original. No, I’m talking about these regional and local jobs that find their way on TV and especially radio.
Radio has this habit of skit commercials. I think the time spent on writing the script was about half of someone’s lunch break. But the funny thing is, new ones pop up every day. So someone somewhere must think they work. For those who don’t know what...
So I'm back in Victoria, came back last night after I recieved word from my work that we would be coming back online Saturday morning.
I left my cushy surroundings in San Marcos (Thanks to my sister in law) and headed back to Victoria. A lot of things go through your head when you realize that your little town and your modest home dodged a major bullet.
First... My brother and creative counterpart ended up staying in Houston... Not because he wanted to, but because after waiting in...
I'm packing up to leave Victoria soon. It's harder than I thought.
It's not sneaking up on us, and after Katrina, people are certainly in an uproar. Usually, I have tried so hard not to write about hurricanes or the usual disaster you may be reading elsewhere. I have always tried to give you dear readers a break from what is happening.
I wish that was the case tonight. Category 5 they say, Mother Nature doesn't grow them much bigger than that.
So now I'm packing, pictures of recent...
Category 4 or not...
If that meterologist interupts the season premiere of "Lost" with anything more than a text crawl...
There will be consequences and repercussions
I saw in the news today there is a report about kids’ lunchboxes. It seems as though many “soft” lunchboxes may or may not contain lead. According to the news story, many parents were in a rush to throw away the lunchboxes, or go buy some sort of lead detector that conveniently is plugged at the end of the story.
My question is… if times are so dangerous nowadays… how did we adults ever survive? I mean these days we x-ray our kids Halloween candy, have them wear flameproof and...
As my bio neatly diplayed on the right side of this webpage suggests... I work with my brother on a variety of projects, but most notably on children's books. They are not the type of books you will see on a top seller list by far. John and I work in a niche market... That's what happens when you have two kids who grew up with a distrust of most things... Even as kids, we always wondered who and what the "Brothers Grimm" must have been like, and I suppose kind of saw ourselves as that sort of...
I swear I never intended to keep the Blues/birthday/us old guys just hate the pop music on the radio theme... But here's another one worthy of note.
B.B. King's birthday is today. He's eighty years old and still tours and plays more often than he stays home. He says he has no plans of slowing down.
He's kind of the staple for blues begginers. People just seem to identify him first, like they would Elvis with rock and roll and Mozart with classical. But there is a reason people identify...
Here's one...
My wife asked me to take her somewhere expensive...
So I brought her to a gas station.
Today is my friend, Kelley's birthday. According to my friend Susan he should be about 48 years old. Kelley's not around these days to experience his birthday today. He passed away about 3 years ago.
Some things you should know about Kelley. He was wheelchair bound, but never let that stop him from living life. He loved baseball, his family, and his friends very much. He loved music. And when I say I was turned on to the blues by a friend of mine, I mean Kelley.
Just because Kelley was...
Took my stepdaughter to the circus yesterday. At first it seems as though maybe the circus isn’t as magical these days because I was older… but I decided that wasn’t the case at all. The old timey traveling circus is dying and may not be around much longer.
When I was younger, I lived in a smaller town than this one. But I remember my first run in with a circus so vividly.
The circuses back then, you could see the animals in their cages from a safe distance as they rested… The elephants...
Following the Burnside story, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown passed away Saturday. I hesitate to write too much because I would end up repeating a lot of what I said about the Blues and American genres...
you can read about it here...Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown dies
It should be noted, however, that Mr. Brown did not want to be tied down to just one genre. While I don't really like it when Blues artists mix in genres... Gatemouth did it really well... and really, who wants to tell a legend...
A few weeks back, I mentioned my love for The Blues... and when prompted to mention some of my favorite living artists... one of them I mentioned was R.L. Burnside.
So while surfing the net and looking at various blogs, I discovered that R.L. Burnside passed away on Sept.1st.
It's not something I expected to be major news... it might have been a footnote on some Entertainment section of a small magazine or a nightly news program if that hurricane wouldn't have been so devastating. But I...
If you were to look through the eyes of Alicia Caballero, you would see so much more than just a bunch of unruly kids. You would see the state of music as it is today. In VFW halls, rented clubs, parties… Far away from the cover bands hired by the local parks and recreation department. You would see underground bands doing what they do best… from the lens of her camera.
Alicia, who turns 18 in a few days, began taking pictures of bands a few years ago using disposable cameras. She...
Sick of buying a CD because you hear one good song, and then discover that the rest of the album stinks?
Yeah so am I, that was a big problem in the late 90's and early part of the 00's. Thankfully with the internet, record companies and music "performers" are actually having to work more to put out a better product.
The internet, with all it's ugly informality has fast become a sounding board in which the likes of Jlo and The Backstreet Boys have to compete for space on your MP3 player...
I decided to write a bit about the people and musical artists that helped make me who I am today. It’s not something that I’ll always do, just when the fancy strikes me. But I got an email today reminding me that one of my favorite bands is going to play today. It’s a member of the band that makes them that much more special…. Paul Nasty.
I first met Paul as an adolescent when I moved into town. It was in some sort of science class, and since he arrived late, he didn’t have a choice but...
My brother called me today, and a quick search online confirms his fear... Fats Domino is missing in New Orleans after Katrina...
To see the story go here Fats Domino Missing
The good news is, there is still hope. He may be OK. I know it may seem a little selfish of me right now with everything going on... But Fats Domino holds a very special place with me. His record was one of the first I remember seeing in my dad's collection, and during my teenage years, his cassettes were the only...
