I was doing my usual dreary drive to work this morning. You know the one Im talking about. The mornings where you wish you had about 30 more minutes of sleep, the suns not really out yet, and your rhythm hasnt caught up with you yet. TGIF in the worst way.
So while driving, I was stopped at an intersection. There was this pick up truck in front of me with two all black dogs excitedly pacing the trucks bed. One looked at me, puffed his chest and barked heartily. You...
I took some time out from my regular work week yesterday to take a little trip up to Houston. My brother, you see, received his Bachelors in graphic design from the Art Institute in Houston. It may seem sort of weird to some folks, as to why my brother would be pursuing so much time and effort for a little piece of paper. He is already working in the field, both for a company, as well as a freelance artist. He has built up small cult followings with the show posters he makes for bands...
I bought a new shirt yesterday. Its pretty boss. Its all black with pearl snaps, just rock and roll to do the job when youre really not trying. I showed it to my wife when I got home. Im not sure if I broke one of the cardinal rules of clothes shopping when married, (#1 never shop for clothes by yourself), or what the issue was, but my wife simply said
Its black. You own too much black, why dont you wear something else?
Its a...
Looking back on my long, glamorous, and often unpaid stint as a writer, I have often found it full of life lessons. Oh sure, Ill never be a Shakespeare or a Hemingway, for that matter Ill probably never be a King or a Scott-Card either. My love/hate relationship with proper grammar and prose has left me less like a writer and more like the guy from the movie Big Fish. Im in love with the story much more than my repeat offenses of run on sentences, and the misuse...
Happy St. Patrick's Day...
As a young man, I spent some time with some colorful Irish men for a few years in a few bars here and there. They always left me with some advice.
1. Put on a Pogues album today. Sure there are better Irish bands out there. But no one was as fun as Shane Macgowan and company.
2. Skip the green beer, real men drink Guinness.
3. Don't let them serve you Guinness in a bottle. From the tap is best. Either way... put it in a glass. Make sure the glass is room...
There is a little group called The Westboro Baptist Church. They pretty much endanger everything that embraces the idea of Christianity. They gained national attention for the first time when they picketed the funeral of Matthew Shepard, back in 1998 who was murdered for being gay. Since then, they seem to have made funeral heckling their number one source of getting attention.
They have picketed many funerals, and celebrated September 11th, saying it was an act of Gods...
My rhythm guitarist, Colin, called me yesterday. He was hanging up his mask and quitting the band. Its nothing personal. There is no bad band break up story here. He just has a lot going on in his life and needs to focus on other things. After a conversation with him that seems to have been repeated many times, I assured him it was alright, that if his heart isnt in it, it would actually hurt the band more than help it, we both agreed that if things work out, wed consider...
These days, I can take a quick look around shopping areas, roadways, restaurants, etc
and I can always see the same thing.
Cell Phones.
They are everywhere. Taking over the airwaves isnt about pirate radio anymore, its about how much signal strength you can get in the area or building youre in. You ever stop and wonder how some people ever got along without them? I do. Especially when I see some regular person with a cell stuck to their ear, yammering on about so...
Awhile back, I wrote about my friend Kelley
(9-13-05) and the impact he left on me. The response was overwhelming, the comments from Kelleys friends and family, as well as the readers on the blog were something that everyone connected with his life are soon not to forget. I think its important to stress that we all feel we lost our good friend/son/brother/uncle/ etc. to a really stupid senseless act.
I pray you all never have to experience something like that again. I hope...
There is an old saying I used to hear that goes
Behind every great man there is a great woman. Im not sure who originally said it, I just thought it was something that they used to say to make the First Ladies feel better when people talked about the president. I mean, after all, I was, for the first 27 years of my life, a pretty hip guy, no need to depend on anyone, living life to the fullest, kickin butt and taking names
But then, something strange...
I was listening to the comedy channel on Satellite Radio this morning, when a particular comedian asked if anyone in the crowd had never waited tables at all. There was a few people who applauded, and he told the crowd.. Those are the jerks
He went on to this pretty funny observation on how he thinks it should be mandatory for every person in America to wait tables for one year in their life so they will learn that theyre cheese fries really arent that...
