The Dixie Chicks had a new album come out May 23rd, and I am absolutely floored by the response it has gotten. If you are not familiar with the Dixie Chicks and their current battle for the airwaves, it all traces back to a London concert back in March 2003, on the eve of the invasion of Iraq. Natalie Maines told the crowd, “Were ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas.” This one little comment exploded into a huge backlash which led to the group’s music being...

I'm probably going to get a lot of push back on this and angry email and comments... But I really need to tell you all something. I am the 1% of America which cannot stand the idea of the "American Idol" TV show. Now before you set up the noose and march my burning likeness down Main Street... allow me to elaborate. I'm a musician. In the loosest sense of the word sometimes. I play punk rock. I've been playing it for about 12 years now. It's not as long as some, but in my genre which is...

Like The Loon mentioned in his blog earlier last week, The Friends Of The Library are having their May book sale this week. It is the perfect opportunity to pick up some spare reading, try out a new author, stock up for the summer, and judge a book by it’s battered cover. Loon struck a chord when I read a line in his entry… it said “Books are good; you need more”. He is 100 percent right. I can’t pinpoint the day I got into reading. I don’t mean learn to...

Saw in the news last night that there is a lot of controversy in the Senate over the National Anthem being sung in Spanish. Obviously this is due to the current immigration issue. But come on honestly, isn’t this getting our britches in a little too tight of a wad despite how we feel on issues about immigration? Do the words of the Anthem lose power if they are said in a different language? I don’t think so. But that’s me personally. I mean, I grew up in South Texas among...

Cuero City Council passed a new ordinance last night prohibiting skateboards and like minded means of transportation on most forms of public property. This seems a little too familiar to the skateboard ordinance of 1998 in Victoria. I will admit, that at least in the article found on the Advocate’s website, the City of Cuero seems more willing to work with the young skateboarders than the City Council of Victoria was when they passed their ordinance. (Skating in certain areas of town...

I saw on the news recently that many Texas officials have begun emergency drills to get prepared for hurricane season. The dim lightbulb in my head flickered for a second. Hurricane season is coming soon. Aw man, didn't we just go through this? A busy and extended hurricane season left me wiped out, stressed, and nervously watching the nightly news. I remember with a headache the long lines of panic striken citizens clamoring for gas at the pumps, grocery stores with bare shelves...

So today, immigrants all over the U.S. are boycotting work. The idea, I am told, is to show America just how much of an impact immigrants make in our daily workforce and economy. Sounds like a good idea in theory I guess. What I don’t really agree with is, that organizers all around the country are urging supporters and businesses to do the exact same thing. That means, that if I want to catch a plate of delicious enchiladas at my favorite Mexican restaurant today… I’m out of...
