If you read this blog often enough
you will know. Im a nerd when it comes to science fiction, and comic books. No apologies. My wife hates it. My daughter thinks its amusing. I know you find it hard to believe because Im such a rock and roll dynamo, but I assure you, its true. I often stay up late at night sleepless wondering why the Silver Surfer has a surfboard if had never been to earth before he got his power cosmic. (seriously)
So
I was coming to...
I found this news article about the Longest race in the world being only a city block. At first I thought it was lame, but the more I read, the more sense it made. There is a lot to be said about the feeling of specific human achievement.
The story fascinated me... well this morning at least.
Read about it if you want.
City Block Hosts World's Longest Race
One year ago, I made my Victoria Advocate debut rambling about how much I dig the Harry Potter books. A lot has changed in that time. But we're all still pretty much the same. I like to think that we covered a lot of ground on this blog. Through all the disagreements... and the topics covered, we're all still Texan.
Thanks to the people who read this little contribution to the public. I hope you got something out of it, even if it is to disagree... I know I have learned from all of you....
2005
Its the day of my wedding. Everything is perfect. She looks wonderful, the church is big, and the hired musicians are playing the most beautiful Spanish songs I have ever heard.
During the reception I pause to talk to my guitar player Scott. We play in a band called The Madagain Saints. Its our most honest effort at playing music in 10 years. Scott has gone through some trials the last few months. Like most of us, he has found comfort in moving away to another town...
Yesterday
Sunday:
10:30am... Sitting in Chris' car as the rural houses fly by. NOFX is on the stereo. They will never be able to replicate the magic of "Punk In Drublic" but this will do. There are some slower songs and I watch the grass bleed into a blur of green with the occasional crop patch. I stare at the asphalt whizzing by. How many times has this highway brought me back? How many good times have I run to on this highway?
Chris changes the CD, it's Bayside's accoustic album....
Two North Texas high school students who were kicked out of class for displaying rebel flags in January vow to take their fight to court. They said they are proud of their heritage, but Burleson High School education officials maintain the Confederate symbol is offensive. Local news reported last night that the girls who wore purses with the flag design met with school officials this week complete with lawyers in tow, and had their request to wear the purses were promptly denied.
Here is...
Literally... almost a year after I wrote about him in this blog last July, I find myself writing about Johnny Cash
the man in black. His new album American V: A Hundred Highways, came out Tuesday. It took some time to actually go out and buy it. There is a reason for it, but I couldnt place it until I read a review of his album online.
The last few American Recording Albums that Johnny Cash are on display a much different man than what many remember in his earlier years, or...
last night, while watching Victoria's fireworks go off... one particular burst of light left debris trails in the night sky looking like minitaure comets falling back to earth.
Someone said... "Look! How pretty." I turned to my wife and said "Actually it looks like a meteor storm.. or aliens invading earth."
For the rest of the display, I imagined hellfire and asteriods pummeling the community center and people running for their lives. Of course... with all my science fiction research...
Tomorrow is the 4th of July. The big bang, summer fun for all, firework central, Oscar Meyer stock day
. Independence Day.
But what does it mean to you?
I mean, 200 hundred and some change years ago, a lot of rich guys decided they didnt want to pay their taxes
that hardly seems like a holiday, it seems like a Republican cliché.
But
there is a much better reason that just that. We have to celebrate the idea of American greatness
Check it out, as...
