Get involved; Let your opinion be known about a BMX track
Location:
Victoria, TX 77901
The proposal by the Victoria Parks and Recreation Commission to build a BMX bicycle track adjacent to the skate park near the community center is a good idea. However, residents of the community, especially those who love BMX bicycles, should get involved. So far, no one has attended two meetings or sent communication to back the park. But Parks and Recreation commissioners want feedback to see if interest exists in the track. The proposed dirt track is 1,200 feet long and features a series of jumps and turns. The cost of the track is estimated at $75,000. These kinds of recreation are invaluable, especially to our younger folks who often wonder if there is anything to do in Victoria. Already, the Lone Tree Hike and Bike Trail is approved and will begin construction in 2009. The more recreation the city can provide, the better. Youth need these kinds of outlets to have fun and to help stay out of trouble. At the very least, residents should send some kind of communication to the commission to let them have feedback on the proposed project. “We’re trying to generate comments from the public – anything that will help us to formulate an opinion,” said Doug Cochran, director of the Victoria Parks & Recreation Department. Cochran said residents should send comments via e-mail at parks@victoriatx.org, and this will help to make a decision on the project. If the commission does not get any feedback at its next meeting Jan 10, the idea will be dropped as a priority. A BMX bicycle track is just another plus for Victoria when it comes to our youth. Let the Parks and Recreation Commission know that. Please visit... http://community.victoriaad... 3 comments from 3 users

Great Proposal, I feel that we as a community should help get this ball rolling. This along with the skate park is something that is needed for today's youth. To much time is spent inside the house on a pc or infront of a gaming console, in todays world. If this gets even a small group of kids off of the couch and into the great outdoors pumping a bicycle, then I am all for it. Parks and recreation have an obligation to this community to help provide outlets for our youth and community and I believe this is a great way to get started. Thanks for the post and bringing this to our attention. posted by

It might be really helpful if several residents went to the next meeting to voice thier opinions on the matter. City Council meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 5:00 p.m. Council meetings are held in the council chambers at the corner of Juan Linn and Main Street. This would be a good opportunity for residents to be heard and to show how much interest there really is for such a park. Just wanted to pass that information onto whomever wants to head it up!!
