"New" Library

Okay, I checked out around 10 books a few days before the public library closed for 4 days so I'd have something to do while going through withdrawal symptoms. I was under the impression that it was closing to re-carpet the building. I've been out of town and doing other things (like reading those books) and only recently checked out the "new" library. (The books were due and I needed new ones.)

I go to the library at least once a week. I have a system. I start with the paperbacks and make my way around the interior until I stop at the computers. This takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. Not anymore, though. Some strange person with a worse sense of organizational planning than I have decided to MESS WITH MY SYSTEM!!!

Now, I can't find anything. Well, I did find the paperbacks, but that was it. At one point I felt like screaming or at least ripping out large chunks of my hair. Before, the helpful staff could see almost anywhere in the place. Now, there are these "hiding" places where anything could happen. And even with the handy little maps kindly printed up (because they are absolutely necessary), I still found myself returning to the one area I could find -- the information desk. I spent at least 30 minutes just trying to find the different sections.

At the end of an hour, I was highly frustrated and confused. I don't like change. I don't handle it well. I don't like it when people mess with my system without alerting me weeks in advance. I need time to adjust to change.

I miss the "old" library. I miss my system.

I have not been to our "new library" i did try going on one of those 4 days that it was closed, though. It sounds complicated! My library as a kid was the Weslaco Public Library. That library was gorgeous! It was spanish style, it almost looked like a Hacienda. It had a wrought iron black fence. As i recall it was a few stories high. What i remember most (naturally) was the children's section. You had to take like 5 "big" stairs to get to it (it was in between the first and second floor) and there was a huge aquarium and always really neat displays. There was displays all over the library but the ones in the childrens section were the coolest! There was a outdoor patio area where there were several benches and a fountain. The fountain was full of all sorts of colorful fish. There was also some theaters where they would show movies on particular days of the week. i loved my trips to the library! And nope, i can't say i recall hearing a rowdy vacuum cleaner! lol! Check it out for yourselves:

I also miss the old library format.  While I don't have a "system" I was able to find what I was looking for.  I'm not very concerned about hiding places, though.  I've been there four times since they changed the format and each time, I've been surprised to find people vacuuming the floor!  I know it's new carpet, but does anyone but me remember when libraries were quiet places?  I guess the vacuums aren't any louder than the kids are so I shouldn't complain, but I do miss the quiet of the libraries with which I was familier while growing up.
