Oh, those young cell phone loving Democrats - Pop Goes the Culture - AprillBrandon's Blog - Victoria Advocate

Here's a question for you: Cell phones are to young Democrats as landlines are to...?
Young Republicans?
True story. According to the Pew Research Center, young people who use landlines are more conservative than those who use cell phones. After polling a bunch of under-30's by both landlines and cell phones, the report states:
"...cell-only young people are considerably less likely than young people reached by landline to identify with or lean to the Republican Party, and even less likely to say they support John McCain."
While the researchers don't know why this is so yet, according to writer Clive Thompson's blog, this discovery could begin to affect landline polls. As the Pew researchers put it:
"Traditional landline surveys are typically weighted to compensate for age and other demographic differences, but the process depends on the assumption that the people reached over landlines are similar politically to their cell-only counterparts. These surveys suggest that this assumption is increasingly questionable, particularly among younger people."
So the question is now, is this discovery going to affect the outcome of polls in the upcoming months? Guess we'll just have to wait and see...

Sep 30, 2008 at 11:09 AM : I believe this is...

I believe this is partially true. But you have the no call list, like that works much, and caller ID. If it looks like a survey, salesman, etc number I don't answer it. It goes to the recorder. Many, many of us "elders" do that nowadays.
But one thing our youngest son, who was a college Republican, learned from us when he was at college is that when the power goes out, yes also the power that feeds your cell tower your connected to, you can use a land line usually. And not one with a cordless phone. He was dead in the water for a little while except his land line.
So us "elders" have learned life lessons. And being raised by depression era parents many "old old school" lessons. Which it is our job to impart those lessons to our children. We made sure his room in his apartment had a basic package corded land line and a calling card. I was surprised how many sales calls got to an unlisted number.
But out of school he uses only cell phone, hard head. He like his parents classify himself as not really Republican but definintely Conservative.

All this speculation....
Democrats don't have land lines as a general rule. They don't provide everyone in the shelter with his/her own phone line.

Initially when Barack Obama was getting the huge crowds, his campaign signed up many new young potential voters.(most had cell phones)...Will this be a factor?.Don't know.
Traditionally young voters do not vote, making the traditional land line a good source for polling, but this election year has been anything ,but tradional...Many,many surprises so far this year.

I think there is something screwy with the survey.
I know that everytime a Large SUV, usually driven by a woman yakking on a cell phone, blows past me, I think, "Damn Republican." Most of the time I'm right because they still wear the Bush/Cheney stickers on the window.
This Democrat has never owned a cell phone, and I only carry the one from my office because they make me.
And, Ernest J. Cash--what is with the shelter remark?
