A small country unto itself. There are some days where I wish Hollywood was a person and I could punch it in the face. Why...or rather why this time I should say. I know Hollywood is remake crazy, recently shown by Rob Zombie's heavily hyped yet unimpressive remake of Carpenter's classic 'Halloween'. There is some cinematic hallowed ground you should just not touch. Enter the Dragon is one of them. What is wrong with a little creativity? Every time you turn around there is a rehashing, remake, reinvention, a re-whatever. They take something for it's name only and then crap all over the concept, the things that made it a hit before for the sake of the almighty dollar. And honestly while I cringe at the idea of an Enter the Dragon remake, there have been some good ones....Ocean's 11...The Italian Job (well hey, I liked it). But for every one of those is a remake like Ben Stiller's "Heartbreak Kid". Of you find the news of Will Smith wanting to remake "The Karate Kid" with his son in the lead role. Yes. Will Smith. Yes. Will Smith is a quite talented actor, much better than most gave him credit for in the beginning. He has staying power, and is not afraid to try different things. Having said that, I wasted TWO hours of my life on "I, Robot"!! TWO HOURS that I will never get back. Should have known better. Meanwhile, movies like "Six Degrees of Separation" fly by under the radar. That was a much better movie to showcase Smith's talents. The Karate Kid? Hollywood has found a formula for successful movies, and it just now pushes new actors through it's mega money-generating machine and churns out crappy rehashes and meaningless junk. It's rare you get a good plot-driven movie anymore. I saw a trailer recently for a movie about a journalist ... do you know what movie I'm talking about? If so, what's it called? It looked pretty good. The last Will Smith movie I liked (and I actually like most of his movies, drama and comedy) was "The Pursuit of Happyness." Clever title using the misspelling of happiness. Just like the movie, a lot of thought and attention were given to storytelling. It's too bad he's sinking to Daniel-san levels. But I like that he's attracted to projects that he can do with his son, unless he's just exploiting the kid.
