In VISD WHO counts? - In VISD you count - EveMacki's Blog - Victoria Advocate

I was born and raised in Victoria. I moved away for school and my husbands career but my family and I moved back home recently. We have three kids in VISD and I am saddened daily by how poorly the students are treated by the district As you walk into the main office on profit drive, there is a mat that states something to the effect of “in VISD you count”. I wonder who they are referring to. I am almost certain it is not speaking of the students or even the teachers. Our district is so poorly managed that many class rooms do not even have complete sets of “class room” books and most school are not even provided copy paper for a full year. I think something is the matter when a district as large as ours, has to have schools fundraise for their own paper. I know this is a small issue, but if our board cant handle a paper budget how do we entrust them with the bond money? The school construction has not even begun and they have already gone $100,000.00 over budget just clearing the land. I have listened to current board members at public speaking engagements and read their comments in the paper and researched them on my own. I am not impressed by any means. Lou Svetlik recently commented on a debate that was held and stated that he was “proud of all the positive things that were happening in VISD”. I can hardly believe that considering he chose NOT to send his own children to VISD. I am just wondering why any board member thinks this district is good enough for my children and not theirs, I do know that Lou is not the only member whose children are not enrolled in VISD. From what I understand a large group of people believe that Dr. Jaynes has a special interest in this district. I believe that it is about time someone does. Good grief, I would think that someone who is married to a teacher of 30 years, has a son-in-law who works in the district and 3 or 4 grand children in the district and 5 children who have already been students would have a special interest. I personally want someone working for me who has these kinds of special interest. I am sure Mrs. Keeling is a somewhat capable woman, but I am not sure of what? She stands on the ground that she has the time to devote to this job, well I hope so considering she is a housewife. I am sorry, balancing your personal checkbook and sitting through a few certification seminars does not qualify you to handle a multi-million dollar bond issue and all of the business matters of a 5A school district. I should know, I was a stay at home mom when my kids were younger, but when they went to school, I went to work. I know Mrs. Keeling has a future political agenda and I just don’t believe that VISD deserves to be her stepping stone. I want change for this district and for my children and their classmates. I want my children to have the positive school experiences that I did here in Victoria. “Dr. Jaynes” – well that says a lot in it self, don’t you think? “Doctor”, a man who delivers babies, treats women with cancer and saves lives daily. A BUSINESSMAN who handles employees on a daily and basis and successfully maintains a million dollar budget year after year. A grandfather who wants the promise of a positive education for his grandchildren, a husband and father who want a safe environment for his family and a Victoria citizen who wants a school district that each and every other citizen can benefit from and be proud of! I think these are the kinds of special interest Victoria and VISD need and should expect from each board member. Dr. Jaynes has a heart in this district and the only string attached is his determination to re-build not only our schools but also our community. I am not typically a BLOG reader but after I heard some of the things that were being written here, I took one look and I am sorry I ever did. I can not believe the horrible things Keeling supporters write about his family. I am most certain that this election is “GOOD vs EVIL”. Dr. Jaynes is a very wonderful man. I think that one good man could make a difference and I am grateful he is willing to try. Thank you both Dr. Jaynes and your supporters for always taking the high road. Honesty, integrity determination are the things you have run your campaign on and I think we should all take note of the nastiness you have looked past for the betterment of each and every child, family, relative and friend in this city.

Thank – you,
