No More Minivan - Living Weird in Austin - Gabriel's Blog - Victoria Advocate

We did a crazy thing this weekend. We took our 2001 Honda Odyssey family hauler down to the local Infiniti dealer and traded it in on a RX-8 sports car. Now you might ask, “Gabriel, don’t you have 4 kids?”
"Why yes I do." However, we are tired of feeling old and suburbanized and do not want to be a van family any more. We still have a 7 seater SUV so we can still haul the kids around. The difference is that now I have a regular car to drive to work and we have a nice fun vehicle for the weekend and date nights.
The minivan was very convenient but not much fun and the experience I had driving it was that most people on the road look at it with distaste and annoyance. I would be driving 70 and get passed constantly because it was a minivan. No one wants to be passed or be behind a minivan it seems. In the same situations in the SUV the people would behave totally different.
So good bye van, hello performance; I’ll be the guy zipping by you in the loud Japanese tuner car with the kids in the back grinning ear to ear. Anyone else feel the way I do?

Feb 26, 2008 at 09:02 AM : OK, Gabriel,...

OK, Gabriel, congratulations! Good for you. Enjoy your sports car while you're young. I hate to see these old guys with white hair flying in the wind as they shoot down the road in their first sports car.
One question. How do you get four kids in the back seat? Got enough seat belts back there, do you?

Feb 26, 2008 at 09:02 AM : Only 2 fit in the back...

Only 2 fit in the back and the 13 year old rides up front. Baby stays at home.
The other configuration is the baby in the back and the wife in the front and the boys stay with their "other" parents which is every other weekend. So we get to use the car a lot actually.

Mar 4, 2008 at 04:03 PM : Gabriel, you are too...

Gabriel, you are too funny! I know the kids are very happy!

I envy you because I just gotta have my BMW 750i RIGHT NOW!
Or I will even take the Lexus LS 460! They are both such wonderful cars.
Somebody help me please! I have to have either of those cars! They are
sooooo BEAUTIFUL!

Anyway, I will be sure to rub it in your face when I get one or both of those
vehicles. I probably won't have a home, a computer, nor a family if I purchase
both vehicles, but I will have my cars!

Let's be real, what's more important my cars or my family? You decide :-)))) (hahaha)
