I will get by! - Touch of Grey - SugarMagnolia's Blog - Victoria Advocate

I will survive! Touch of grey, indeed. I believe a person's wisdom shows in the grey areas (mostly on the scalp). Speaking of which, I believe I added a few more of those touches of grey to my own head this past week. Word to the wise, GET YOUR FLU SHOTS. Easy for me to say, I got mine but still came down with a rip-roarin' case of Mr. In Fluenza this past week. Unfortunately, it takes about two weeks for the vaccine to become fully effective, leaving an unkindly little window for bugs to plan a sneak attack, and well, that appears to be what happened to yours truly. After massive doses of Alka-Seltzer Cold, Ibuprofen, cough syrup, liquids, tissues, you name it, I am finally back in the game. I don't intend to do this flu thing again. I still encourage all of you out there to get the shot, though; maybe you can avoid such misery. After about two decades of taking the vaccination, I have gotten the flu only twice, so I guess I shouldn't complain. We may be in for a bad season this year. The worst part - the beautiful weather finally finds its way to our little corner of South Texas, and I was unable to get out and enjoy. After the rainiest summer I have witnessed in years, and a too-long and too-hot September, we need - no, DESERVE this gorgeous weather. Makes a soul happy to be alive. That was all I have to say, and - it's alright. I will get by....

SugarMag! I am floored. Please pick me up and shake me! Besides my husband & myself, can there truly be other Deadheads in this area? Do you have shows you'd like to trade? I'm glad you're feeling better. Aiko Aiko!

Oct 26, 2007 at 09:10 PM : Greetings,...

Greetings, WorldTurning! I do indeed enjoy the Dead, but have never had the privilege of seeing them live. Hard to believe, I know. I think the world conspired against me in that respect. I had to make a choice of leading a conventional life, or following the Dead around, and being a nomad. So, I guess I took the road I had to at the time. Still a rover at heart, and will always enjoy playing my Dead albums and wondering, what if......I truly love so much of the music from that era, and grew up listening to it and it is such a part of me. It is hard to find people in this area that can truly relate....glad to hear you and your husband love the Dead, too! Send a message to me, maybe we can get together and swap stories, or go "Truckin", haha!

Oct 28, 2007 at 01:10 PM : Miss S.M. - I too am...

Miss S.M. - I too am floored, I am starting to think you and I may be cojoined twins connected at the soul. I'll bet you know what I am talking about. I shall elaborate through another medium. Oh.My.God! The first real concert I have recollection of, was The Moodies and Trapeze(whom J.H.) had just had signed to Threshold, in December of 1970 at the old Austin Municipal Auditorium, on the lake. It changed my life. It was the Question of Balance Tour. They started with "Ride My SeeSaw" and continued mesmerizing me for almost three hours. "Legend Of A Mind", at that point in time, I reluctantly admit, was almost an anthem for my tribe. I was fortunate enough, a couple of years later, to hear Tim Leary lecture at the U.T. Student Union Center. Goosebumps..........I probably have seen the Moody Blues, no less than twenty times, as recently as summer before last at the Woodlands. They are timeless.Regretfully, John Lodge had finally retired at the last time I saw them. That took some really cool songs out of the sets, but it was still a killer show. Perhaps the next time around, I had best grab a couple of tix for you...........At the very least, we need to open a bottle of good wine, and kick back together, and watch the PBS DVD of the band performing at Red Rocks Amphitheater, outside of Denver, about five miles from where I lived for a year..........more bumps........
oh yeah, the "touch of grey".......kind of suits you anyway. Welcome aboard. What a delightful addition to the group! As for Jerry & co......there is a cut on John Fogerty's "Deja Vu All Over Again" disc, called "Sugar, Sugar", that has some honey sweet picking in it that you would swear was either Jerry................. or J.C. Fogerty channeling him! I can only assume, that you possess all of the New Riders of The Purple Sage stuff, that is essentially Dead recordings with a bluegrass(and maybe some other grass) flavor.

Thanx for the welcome, Mike! Yea, it seems that kindred souls we may be. I love the New Riders of the Purple Sage, too, a and I think sometimes they get lost in the shuffle. They are so intertwined with the Grateful Dead, I guess that happens sometimes. That whole scene coming out of California those days was simply amazing - were you around to witness it? I envy you. Enjoyed your Moody Blues memories. I saw them a couple times in Houston, excellent, excellent. I am ready when you are to watch that DVD! Excuse me now, while I try to find a way to listen to that "Sugar Sugar" cut....
