I have long doubted any "silver bullet" solution as a savior of the newspaper industry. Despite consistent newsroom cuts at metropolitan dailies such as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times or Washington Post, smaller local papers with less direct competition do relatively well, according to The State of the News Media 2008, an annual report reviewing the state of the mass media industry. As such, the majority of the newspaper industry is looking to technology - the Web, etc. - to cover increasing losses in advertising revenue. Verve Wireless, a technology developer partnering with publishers and media outlets, is claiming cell phones may be the salvation of the industry.
