I'm not much of a biker (from what I've heard, that requires getting off the couch) but back in the day, I was quite the awesome roller blader...at least on flat land. However, anytime the slightest decline encountered my path, you bet your happy arse I jumped off the road and into the ditch.
I feel your pain.
