About Mike

Mike Austin, formerly Captain Boots' Pilot, is an umpteenth-generation Native Texan whose family has lived under all six flags. He was born during the dog days of summer in 1950 on the banks of the Sabine River and Adams Bayou, with both feet in Texas but with the smell of Louisiana boudin and gumbo in the air. He is the father of two beautiful boys who obviously resemble their mom. His free time these days is spent with his family, mountain biking daily, taking in a good rock concert from time to time, and heading for the slopes when they are covered with snow.
His first real job, after delivering the TV Guide, Grit newspaper, bagging groceries, and decking on a shrimp boat, was as captain of a beat-up old crew boat, with the privilege hauling one Captain Boots from beach to barge and shell reef to shell reef for two exciting years. Not a bad gig for an 18-year-old bay rat trying to figure out what he wants to be if he grows up. Over the years, he has worn a lot of different hats in his journey to becoming a husband, dad, Little League manager, go-kart mechanic, storm chaser, and by trade, an electrical designer in the power and petroleum industries.
He has traveled extensively throughout the lower 48 states, Canada and Mexico, having ridden his motorcycle from the high Sierra Madres in Mexico to the top of our own Rockies and the Continental Divide. He has walked from New Orleans to Chicago, participated in a protest or two, and flown under the radar once or twice. He has stood atop a 12-story pyramid overlooking the Mayan jungles and on the trading floor in the New York Stock Exchange. In the ongoing process of learning to drive, he has been scraped off of the pavement and bounced off of the cow catcher of a Southern Pacific locomotive. If he were a cat, undoubtedly he would be working down the back side of his nine lives.
He has stories to tell and opinions to share and compare. Should you recognize yourself or someone you know in one of his tales and be pleased, that would, in turn, please the pilot. Should you do the same and find it offensive, please rest assured that that particular tale consists of characters and events that are completely fictitious and that any resemblance to real events or persons, dead or alive, is purely coincidental.
