Radical chicanos want to take back the lands LOST by Mexico in the Mexican War, occupy it and call it Aztlan. Mexico was also paid 15 million dollars, and given back much of the land the US had captured. So it wasn't TAKEN.The US Army and the Marines kicked booty all the way to Mexico City. Moral--don't invade Texas or the US. Mexico should be happy they only lost the Northern part of the country. From the Halls of Moctezuma. Nice ring to it.

The roots of Aztlan are the two words: aztatl tlan(tli) meaning "heron" and "place of," respectively. 'Tlantli' proper means tooth, and as a characteristic of a good tooth is that it is firmly rooted in place, and does not move.
Like the families of the original porciones of Texas, of which i am a member of.
Oh and Aztlan is not Spanish...it's Nahuatl, The ancient language of the Aztecs.

In Chicano folklore, Aztlan is often appropriated as the name for that portion of Mexico that was taken over by the United States after the Mexican-American War of 1846.

OMG, where has this gone.
And Mikey, I call them as I see them, and you definitely lean left in ideas. What does mileage have to do with if you need a translation sign or not? If you do one sign or translator, and I don't think you need any, you must put up a sign for all. Everyone's equal right, whether you are from Mexico, Spain, France, Saudi, Korea?
This guy is putting his own business up for whatever he wants to run it like. If people don't like what he does then his business will fail and it will be all on his money. If what he does is okay with people, say what you want in a language they understand or point to it, his business will continue to prosper. Let the public decide, no part of the government should be involved in this one. People are free nowadays to go to any other business, no one is locked out in our modern, free market times.
BTW, one of the interviews I saw him in he stated he was English as Official Language person, not English Only. You can speak whatever language you want in his establishment, he just wants you to order so he can understand it.

I grew up in a time when white people considered themselves so important that having a conversation with my grandmother in Spanish had something to do with them. It bothers white people that many of us do not give a Rats what they think about the language of our fore fathers. If we ever have need to communicate with the English we can strive to do our best to reach understanding or go on. White folks you simply do not matter that much. I do not care if you approve of my pronunciation or other little issues you have about the language. I will not change an iota the way I do business or communicate any where, any time, any place. If you don't like it, SO WHAT !!!!

Ok, just some thoughts, no opinion either way...
1. Unlike other countries, America does NOT have an official language. Yes English is the majority...but it isn't the official language.
2. Everybody in this county except people 100% Native Americans are descended from immigrants...and what did we do to the Native Americans? Forced them to speak English.
3. Americans are lazy about not learning a new language. If you say otherwise you are just kidding yourself. Everyone has to take a foreign language in high school to graduate, so why do you not continue once you have it started...not because you don't have the means to. You just don't feel like learning a new language....I'm pretty sure that's what lazy means. Not doing something just because you don't feel like it.
3. I heard a joke when I went to France as a kid. What do you call someone who speaks 3 languages? Tri-lingual. What do you call someone who speaks 2 languages? Bi-lingual. What do you call someone who speaks only one language? American. If you go to a European country or even to India or Japan...they speak English, though they aren't happy about having to speak English to you, as I experienced. They learn to speak English because they have to deal with us. And we refuse to learn other languages. There was a girl from Findland who stayed with us in our host house in Nice, France...she was fluent in 7 languages, she was only 17 years old.
That said...I am a uni-lingual person too lazy to learn another language...I started French in high school, learned enough to make it through a 3 week trip to France. Then dropped it and forgot everything. I also find myself annoyed when I have to deal with someone who doesn't speak English. But I have a feeling they are just as frustrated.
America was founded so people could be free to be who they are. A person moving from whatever country is free to be who they are. There is no law saying you have to speak English in America. The store owner is also free to deny service to non English speaking people. Everyone on this forum is free to have their own opinion on the matter .....That's America. God Bless Us!

I am not saying that we should speak multiple languages. I am saying this issue should not be used to divide us.

Do you guys realize that there are over 270 cases sitting stagnant in Steve Tyler's office because he REFUSES to accept ALL 270 cases for prosecution??? Judge WEISER, had to let several juveniles out of JDC because as, juveniles, too much time had lapsed before they went to trial, and they had to be released! Criminals will go free... Our DA is refusing to prosecute TWO HUNDRED AND SEVENTY cases! He hasn't accepted cases since mid October. Wake up Victoria!

It is a little late to expect us a society to pick up other languages to suit a few. The difference between us as a country & the others that you speak of is they don't have the immigrant population we have. When it comes to speaking "Spanish" what is spoke in Texas is not proper Spanish we all know this, it is a hybrid. Not all Hispanics or Latin Americans speak the same language it is all dialect driven & it varies by regions. It just makes sense that when you come to a country as diverse as ours you learn the common language. What you choose to speak in your personal life is your business.

Accusing Hispanics of being defensive, when all the same old innuendos are used ,is being a little disingenuous.
We are comparing the justice system, incompetence, and language barriers, and we are supposed to come up with some sort of solution?
It’s no wonder that Europe laughs at us, because even a small country such as Luxemburg is a trilingual country, speaking German, French and Luxembergish. Most of the people in Europe speak more than one language. In the United States, some are using English as a wedge issue. Many people that live close to the good Canadian border, speak French and English. It is a benefit, not a hindrance.
If we adopt English as the official language, that would be fine with me, but I’m still not going to vilify people or blame them for some isolated cases, where criminals were set free, because of incompetence, or just because they do not speak English.

See that seems to be an easy answer BUT the judge followed the letter of the law. She stated it was the hardest decision she had to make BUT it was an infringement on his "rights". Now this was a person who went to public high school & community college, took english calsses in school, basically was manipulating the system. What can you do? I don't remember what the circumstances were with the interpreters but to me the whole thing was an abuse of the court system. The other cases that have been popping up too are little known languages interpreters are hard to find & just think how much extra money they are costing just because they found a loophole that may let them off the hook for a crime they committed.

Charges against a man accused of raping and repeatedly molesting a 7-year-old girl have been dropped because the court took too long to find an interpreter fluent in his native West African language.
Montgomery County Circuit Judge Katherine D. Savage dismissed the nearly three-year-old case against Mahamu Kanneh last week, saying the delays had violated the Liberian immigrant’s right to a speedy trial.

I do not live in Philadelphia so I can’t assume to know all the facts. The commission felt they had enough evidence to go forward with this case.
The people, Mr.Vito targeted did not initiate the investigation, the commission did.
I have seen Mr. Vito on television many times, and his “ English only” protest has nothing to do with his restaurant. He is using the media to get his word out.
I saw the case in question, and that was just a case of incompetence, because an interpreter was available, but was not asked to interpret. If we are going to prosecute someone, they must be read their rights, and they must understand them.

I'm going to ignore the less intelligent in here & just state this. This man runs a private business & should have the right to post whatever signs & refuse service to whomever he pleases. If people are able to read & understand the sign then they should also be able to communicate their orders as he is requesting. If people don't like it they have the right to take their business elsewhere. He is not denying anyone of any of their rights & the law they are going after him with doesn't make sense. The way I see it if you wish to speak your native tongue so be it but when it interferes with someones livlyhood then it is their right to stop it. Look where we are at right now in the courts, murderers, rapists etc being set free for lack of interpreters cause these people claim they do not understand English. Bunions and language?
Buy an electronic gadget and you will get about four different sets of instructions ,in four different languages. Simply ignore the instructions that are not written in English.
The United States does not have an official language, but English is the common language spoken by 96% of the population. Spanish is the second most language spoken. The United States holds the fifth largest Spanish-speaking population in the world.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
A reason businesses want to tap into the 30 million that speak Spanish, so the bilingual signs will not come down anytime soon. The color of business is green.

him.
I have seen him being interviewed several times. He is standing up for “English Only” which is his right. He didn’t build that multi-million dollar business by being a bad business man. The commission will decide if he broke any city ordinances.
He could have simply chased them out of his business ,kept his mouth shut, and no one would have known, but he believed strongly that English should be the only language spoken,so he made his protest. Only a naïve person would think someone would make a story out of him wanting to keep the lines going……lol

I read the story, been following the story in the news for several months, and I said Mr. Veno is being investigated by the Philadelphia Commission on Human relations.

I don’t really know, but I would think that debit card machine at Gamestop programmed in Spanish is not the norm
.One day I was standing in line to pick up my prescription at H-E-B pharmacy, when I overheard a lady complaining. She did not know whether to stand in line, or go right up in the counter; because the instruction sign was in Spanish, so I flipped the English version for her to see. Now, H-E-B made a business decision to use a bilingual sign to instruct their customers, they should have a one-sided bilingual sign to avoid any confusion. My point, no one is forcing these businesses to use “se habla Espanola” signs or the bilingual “watch your step sign”. They have a business reason.
I have been here 62 years and the bilingual signs have been here forever, are they even needed? Has anyone even asked? Do some just want the issue?

I guess the only thing left to do is take your business elsewhere if you don't like the service. No complaining, just go elsewhere.
I will not learn to speak another language (and I don't see myself as lazy), unless I have to go to another country. It's not my place to change for someone coming "into" this Country.
Immigrants, of all kinds, need to assimilate "here" and not expect us to change our whole lives for them. It's called adaptation.

It's interesting that this has turned into a racial debate when many European immigrants are of the same race as Vento.

I was born and raised in South Texas, so I know that the population's majority are Hispanic, Latino, what have you. I have no issue with the culture. But I do remember a time, less than 40 years ago, when those who moved over here from Mexico with their families, wanted a better life for themselves. More job opportunities, better wages, better way of life.... My neighbors were "fresh" from Mexico. They had 2 children close to my age and we were friends. I remember the children being frustrated at school because of the language issue, but their parents encouraged them to speak English always... even at home. Because they were in America!!! I don't see why now, it has become an issue!!! There are certain incidences where speaking Spanish or having an interpreter would be necessary, such as at a hospital, or the Social Security Administration, the INS.... But I don't think that English-only speaking Americans should be FORCED to speak Spanish!
Last week I was at Game Stop by Jason's Deli. I was going to pay for my purchase with my debit card.... the machine was in ONLY Spanish. When I asked why, the sales clerk told me it was easier to set it up that way than for both languages.
Why is it only Spanish? Why not Dutch? Cantonese? Vietamese? French? Don't we have citizen's of those countries living in America? If we force everyone to learn Spanish, then are the Asian Americans going to feel left out and force us to learn their language?

Both sides of my wife’s grandparents were born overseas. Two different languages. I don’t see anywhere around here those language’s posted.
Hmmm, I wonder if it’s because Mexico is only 232 miles away from Victoria not 7000 miles or so and not separated by the Pacific or Atlantic Ocean
.Oh, I get annoyed when I call Microsoft, and have to listen to the language options; then I get a techie that I have a hard time understanding. Not his fault, Microsoft made a business decision.
I read the story a couple times, and I can’t see where the unwanted customers demanded anything. In fact the story said it was a small sign, and the restaurant owner is taking advantage of the illegal immigration situation to make his protest. The money the restaurant owner loses, on people that he does not want to cater to, will be made up in free advertising. This man is being investigated by the Philadelphia Commission on Human relations, for possible violation of a city ordinance that prohibits discrimination in employment, public housing accommodations based on race, ethnicity or sexual orientation.
Camille Charles, a sociology professor at the University of Pennsylvania said the restaurant owner sign hearken back to the “whites only” postings of the Jim Crow era.
If the restaurant owner did not violate the city ordinance, he will be found not guilty and life goes on.

I'm confused...all the guy wants is for people to order in a language that he and his employees understand. So people are turning THAT into a racial attack. Excuse me, but it says NOTHING about Hispanics or Spaniards...this "policy" goes for ALL OTHER LANGUAGES.
This is exactly why I believe that minorities are racist against themselves. They are constantly finding ways as to how they are picked on and expect people to treat them better because of their race, ethnicity or culture. To expect them to be treated the same is classified as "discrimination"...
THAT'S CRAP

Big deal. This guy is limiting the number of potential customers with his policy. Real smart business.
I wouldn't trade, or eat where I wasn't wanted. Does this ring a bell on any other subjects?

The problem with the US is that people are too lazy to learn other languages.
Most Americans don't realize that there are many other countries where its citizens speak multiple languages.

Both sides of my wife's grandparents were born overseas. Two different language's. I don't see anywhere around here those language's posted. They are all buried here in Texas, 3 here in Victoria, their children all born in USA. But her parents learned and speak English, Dad in Army WWII. They all worked and made a living here in the USA just fine. The grandparents spoke a broken, heavy accent English when I met them, all their chidren speak English some with a slight accent. No native language signs, no translated forms, just if you are going to live and work in a country you are doing yourself and your children a favor to learn to speak that country's dialect. But, many still can and do speak the old language to others here and across the pond. Nothing wrong with that.
Never heard them speak of going into a restarant and demanding that the owner get someone to speak their language. That makes no sense.

You know, I cannot remember the name of the place or where it was, as it was a place we weren't looking for...it was just near where we were at the time. I do remember that it was a small place though. My mother and I were in Victoria, it was after the lunch hour rush, and I'm assuming most of the wait staff wasn't there, or were in the back, because I just saw one waitress out on the floor.
Oh, I'm not a traveler and I will never travel internationally.

I suggest you never attempt international travel.

I think this works both ways. I dined at a Mexican restaurant in Victoria a few years back, and no one spoke English in there. There were no interpreters and ordering was quite a chore. I had to point at things and most of the menu's were in Spanish so I didn't know for sure what I was ordering, and then she would ask me spomething in Spanish and I just sat and looked at her. What part of "I don't speak spanish, or understand a word of it, didn't she understand? Shouldn't they have been worried about English speaking customers and providing what they expect English speaking businesses to provide for them?

Why is it that english is only pushed on spanish speaking people, Not all of us are illegal aliens. Hell My family has lived in Texas since long before it was Texas.
We and 130 other spanish speaking families in Texas were part of the original spanish settlers of this land.

I think not only should that guy have that right, but it should be law. If you can't at least speak English you need to get out of my country. I'm tired of seeing EVERYTHING printed in at least languages. Automated instructions on the phone ask me if I want them in English or Spanish....WHY!!!!Its a matter of time before the people (of the states), that border Mexico take the law into their own hands. We are wasting Billions of dollars of tax money on them, and they are draining ALL of our Hospitals of their resources. Sorry I'm off into another issue, but it pisses me off. Their taking us over without firing a shot.

He has said that he has no one to translate to ANY language, so you must be able to order in English. That is his right to run that way. He runs a very busy shop and if you cannot speak English you cannot get served.
