For those of you who actually knew Jerome and are still writing negative things, shame on you. For all of you other people who feel he is a sad story but oh well it is his fault. Maybe you should find someone who actually knows what the TRUE story is. The paper makes him out to be this hometown hero gone bad and tries to get people to feel sorry for him. He was Jerome, he was no hometown hero and he is not bad. Yes he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, he will tell you that himself, however, I feel that you would not give him the chance because he is "convicted". Oh and Rage, you say he killed someone like it was intentional. You obviously didn't know him at all. He doesn't want your sympathy nor does he want your pitty. He would look you straight in the face, tell you he wants nothing from you, then ask you what favor he can do for you. He is a giver and a fighter. He will make it through this because he has friends and family that love him. As for those that do love him, and talk to him still on a regular basis, all we ask is that you pray for him. That alone is enough to pull anyone through anything.

Lay off the V-dores already. If you stay at home all day...can you not find something to do positve besides ridiculing a group of high school kids.

FYI--Jerome did his time for the manslaughter charge. He was paroled early for good behavior and the state of California would not allow him to come to Texas and serve his parole. He was doing very well in an impossible situation. Holding down 2 jobs, going to school, keeping an apartment and a car with NO support from the government--he started from scratch. Coach Hackney--Jerome IS a good man, unfortunately, was in the wrong place at the wrong time and got caught up in a bad situation. I agree it should make no difference whether he was homecoming king or not....how many other VHS graduates are serving time?? out of state?? did we read about it on the front page?? Jerome is going to get through this just like he did the first one with the support of his Texas family, friends and his faith. He would appreciate the support of his hometown, also.

stayathomedork...of course you are allowed to post whatever opinion you have, not everybody has to agree with it, however.
People with money in Victoria get free passes? Um, spin a globe, close your eyes and point...it's the same situation wherever your finger lands.
And if you don't agree with what makes the paper and what doesn't, then don't buy the paper and start your own. Then you will discover how difficult it is to determine what gets printed.
Victoriadore shoplifts? Well, would a normal shoplifter make the front page? Probably not. Would someone guilty of manslaughter make the front page, regardless of recognition? In a market the size of Victoria, probably. Fact that he was a former homecoming king suggests many in Victoria know who he is, therefore his story is relevant. While the Victoriadore may be recognizable locally, her crime is not front-page material.

Back to OCL's initial comment: So true, OCL. And the inverse is that so many of these kids don't understand that the devilment they do as teenagers can be a detriment to them for the rest of their lives.
It is true that it's never too late to start fresh but we have a teenage nephew living with us that's finally beginning to see that he's starting a race miles behind because of the choices he made earlier in life that caused him to miss a lot of opportunities for an even start.

Oy... Seems to me we all want to be vicarious editors for the Advocate so we can see only our own pet peeves published on the front page!
Before I go any further let me clear this up ahead of time. Yes, I made the team in HS. Also made the band (All State, thank you).
Rage, your comment is correct but your reasoning concerns me. In all likelihood the young VDore who was charged with shoplifting may or may not have been front-page worthy but your comment seems to imply that because a lot of people and/or kids do it, it should simply be shrugged off as inconsequential. I think it's much more than that and indicative of our no fault society.
Finally, it's a sad fact that those with more money, position or power often get a better deal - and I'm in *NO* way condoning that situation. But I'd be less than a realist if I didn't acknowledge that is the way it is.
That old saying about an excrement sandwich is sad but nonetheless true.

Stevie, my making the team comment was aimed at "stayathomemom."
Answer me this: is the theft newsworthy because every petty crime should be newsworthy, or is it newsworthy because of who committed it?
People have always liked to take cracks at the Victoriadores or whatever it is they're called now. Personally, I couldn't stand most of them when I was in school. But they're sure as heck not the only group of kids at Memorial that commit crimes.
And I just get the sense the there are a lot of people in town that want to "expose" them or something. To that, I say "get a life." Anyone who feels that strongly about the Victoriadores really needs to stop living vicariously through the teenagers in town.

Yeah, and you have the right to sound like a fool, too. Look, the Advocate is going to print stories that it thinks are newsworthy. Mr. Bates' situation is newsworthy. Some drill team girl committing a misdemeanor isn't.
It sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder with anyone who has any means. What's the matter, did you not make the team when you were back in high school?

I agree with STEVIE. In VICTORIA it matters when you have money and who you know. The VDORE might have committed a small crime now but it could ESCALATE to a BIGGER CRIME IN THE FUTURE. But of course she knows that her parents will always bail her out. What are her parents teaching her.

Certain people in Victoria DO get special treatment. That's a fact. It's who you know in Victoria and how much money you have. I went to school with someone who's father was a big man for the TABC and did his parties ever get busted? No.
I don't care about the Vdore stealing from Dillards or wherever. You know how many people steal? Do we print every single persons photo in the paper that steals from a department store?
The guy KILLED someone while driving drunk. Thats news. I don't necessarily agree with the Advocate printing the story since he no longer lives in Victoria much less Texas. But who really cares about some girl stealing from a department store. It's not like she's Miss TX. She's was Miss Victoria...what, like 4 girls participate per year? LOL...its not that big of an achievement.

Stevie and stayathomemom, GET A LIFE!!! Are you suggesting that everyone who has 'MONEY" or is a "VDORE" is convicted of a misdemeanor crime their picture should be on the front page?? Of course, now this, by reason of fairness, would have to include photos of all underage MIP's, possession of marijuana or any other drugs, DUI, shoplifting, curfue violation...Now is that reasonable. I knew Mr. Bates and he was, and as far as I know, and is a good kid. Unfortunately he made some unwise decisions that have cost him dearly. I hope Jerome can get through this, get on with his life and accomplish his desires. It is not too late for a new beginning.

Just told my son the story. He just said he cannot figure it out. Just never know what will happen.

What a sad story...so much potential wasted and his life won't ever be the same. I hope that other kids take this as a heads up. It doesn't matter much what you accomplished in high school or how popular you were if you fail to think about your actions and make the correct choices in your life, it is all too easy to throw it all away.
