I was summoned to jury duty on March 24. Called in the first group, I went to the court where Jesse Tejeda's trial would take place. The DA talked about possible punishment in case the jury was to return a guilty verdict. This was a capital offense but the state was not seeking the death penalty. Instead, if found guilty of capital murder, Tejeda would automatically be sentenced to life without possibility of parole. I had never heard of this punishment option in Texas before. Is this something that the last legislature passed? I wasn't chosen for the final twelve, but I believe that Tejeda is bound for the Huntsville Hilton for a very long time.
