UHV presents free health fairs to students and public

The Victoria fair will be from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Multipurpose Room of the University Center building, 3007 N. Ben Wilson.
The free event, which is open to the public, will include blood pressure checks and cholesterol screening. Attendees also can get information about immunizations, mental health, home health care, substance abuse assistance and other topics.
The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center also will have its mobile blood bank on campus to take blood donations.
The Sugar Land fair will be from 3:30 to 6 p.m. April 17 in the Rotunda of the University of Houston System at Sugar Land, 14000 University Blvd. The free, public event will include blood pressure checks and information about nutrition, cancer and other health-related topics.
Both events will be manned by undergraduate students from the UHV School of Nursing as part of a project for the nursing leadership class.
"This gives our nursing students a chance to help the public and demonstrate their leadership skills in planning a community event," said Denise Neill, co-director of the School of Nursing.
The event also will provide valuable health information to UHV students, she said.
"With the stress and lack of sleep that's all too common in college students, many can find themselves ill," said Minnie Urbano, director of student services. "These annual events are a great chance for students to get the information they need to stay healthy."
