Ok People you all seem to know..Well, let me tell you something..You non-friendly pedistrian drivers ..the other day I was going to the Mall and that street by the way is packed all the time..there was an older couple..trying to cross from the Discount Tire to the mall area..well, it was windy and cars are flying...and we were in line for the light and I placed my emergency flashers and I signaled to the guy over to let the old people through and he looked over to the next people but by that time everyone knew what we were trying to do for the couple ..they would of never made it..across..or they would of been standing there a very long time..I am so sorry you guys are so into yourselves that you could never do a common courtsey..I guess that is why victoria is the way it is..that area is full of people that come from other states and countries to come visit our "nice friendly people" yeah right..whatever..

I suppose the reason they build those huge parking lots at the shopping malls in Austin and Houston is to appeal to the people who "walk" to the place. Geez, what a maroon!

Please people! Use some common sense and we'll all be a lot happier. If you are on foot, pay attention to those big 3,000 lb+ objects traveling at high rates of speed and don't step out in fron of them. Even at signals (this is Victoria, after all).

I thought this atricle was going to make it w/o a post of some "know it all" but I guess not. Huck, just b/c a pedestrian is in the street doesn't mean they have the right of way. It doesn't make it right to go plow into them either, but they can only cross safely at certain designated places. Something else you might not know, is that if there is a sidewalk adjacent to the street, you have to walk on it first before walking in the street. Lots of walkers in Victoria do not do this and unfortunatly almost get hit. In closing might I ask you one thing, are you a Aggie????

Well TexasHuckleberry....you seem to know (or think you know) everything. Well first let me set you straight. Let's start with your sentences, which are run ons and fragments and make no sense to the reader. Secondly, Pedestrians do not have the right of way and can not cross wherever they want, except in certain places. You say check our manuals??? What manual? I just bought a new car and didn't see it in there anywhere. But I did look up section 552 of the Texas law on pedestrians, and oh my, guess what. YOU WERE WRONG! So I decided to paste the section that applies in this case. Not only for you, but so maybe someone will take the time to walk a little out of the way to a intersection so they don't get hit.

552.005. CROSSING AT POINT OTHER THAN CROSSWALK.
(a) A pedestrian shall yield the right-of-way to a vehicle on the
highway if crossing a roadway at a place:
(1) other than in a marked crosswalk or in an unmarked
crosswalk at an intersection; or
(2) where a pedestrian tunnel or overhead pedestrian
crossing has been provided.
(b) Between adjacent intersections at which traffic control
signals are in operation, a pedestrian may cross only in a marked
crosswalk.
(c) A pedestrian may cross a roadway intersection
diagonally only if and in the manner authorized by a traffic control
device.

I just want to say..I guess I was the one that mention the walkovers or crossovers ..and now someone is screaming... Ohhh what about the streets well, guess what those streets will always need to be fixed because we have high trafficking in victoria and Nobody's walking..So, now that gas is up I see more and more teenage children walking on Navarro than ever before...because now they figured out that they may have to walk to the mall as people do in Houston or Austin and everywhere else...my whole point is Victorians are not used to pedistrians ...and guess what people.... they have the right away.. look in your drivers manuals...anyway..if you dont want crossovers I guess X amount of people will have to be KILLEd so that the state can say ok..you all need crossovers...too bad for the people who died right...oh well..
that is the same thing that happened on the Port Lavaca Highway..X amount people had to die till they said ...Oh well I guess we do need a divided highway..maybe it is DAngerous... but how many people died on that highway..way too many I can tell you that.. Oh well, its only a suggestion ...I am not going to get upset over something that doesn't concern me ..I just thought I would say... well, maybe we could prevent something ...you people go ahead and discuss what you want and if people die... Oh well..no skin off my nose..

So where do all these people voting for elevated crossovers think they are going to be built? Geez the streets are in disrepair but lets spend the money instead on elevated sidewalks! People need to pay attention when they are crossing a busy street....as I was told as a child...always look both ways before crossing!

People on foot need to cross at the light. If they don't it use to be called jaywalking in many places. That was a safety thing to keep accident's from happening.

I agree wholeheartedly.....The drivers must yield to pedestrians, but the pedestrians have a responsibility also...that is not to be stupid and cross where it is obviously unsafe anytime of the day.

Everytime we have an unfortunate accident....the paper and media starts screaming "What can we do to prevent this?" We can obey the laws for pedestrians and for vehicles.....not take chances and accidents will not happen. No one intends to be injured....but yes....it can happen to you if you walk and wear dark clothing at night; try to cross in very busy traffic, or try to cross at all at night.

It would be just fine if people would follow pedestrian traffic laws and watch where they are going. The majority of auto-pedestrian accidents in Victoria are the fault of the pedestrian...the driver of that vehicle, is really no more at fault than if the person had been a vehicle that pulled out in front of her.
