Yeah, I went to Walmart this past Sunday.....another great experience. No complaints! :)
tstorm, it goes past Waco. There is one in Waxahachie and Cleburne! Dallas has a Central Market (higher price fancier goods).

Went to Walmart yesterday evening. A very pleasant experience. Only saw two "Isle Hogs" and their lovely beasts(children). The register I went to had 1 person just finishing in front of me.
The register operator was quick and friendly. It was a man, that must be why it was quick and friendly.
Also, now that I think about it, the I-35 corridor is pretty much loaded with HEB's all the way through Waco. My bad Rage.

I have spoken to and showed the produce people at the Navarro HEB many times about some of the produce they put out. It is absolutely insulting how some of it is at times and the price they want for it.
We had a guy who retired out at work this year who lived in Katy. He would bring in ads from Houston. When you have stores on opposite corners competition sure helps out the consumer. Some of us would get him to bring in things like meat packages they would have on sale and it was sad how much more we would have paid here than what he was getting it for.
And on the meat package thing, in Victoria I go to Sam's then get out the vac seal and seperate it up. Variety is not like HEB but Sam's is better price a quality for what I get.
And as far as Dallas...when I go see my bro up in Bonham I have stopped in Big D a few times and from what I see it is just high $$ up there. Lots of money running around up there.

If you want to see bad service, make a couple of trips to the local Honda dealership service dept. After a few trips there, you will want to hug and kiss the worst HEB or Wal-mart employee you encounter. I bet that they could even break redrage and tstorm5,s spirit. lol

They are getting close! I thought the closest HEB was in Waco, but I did a little search and they have one in Waxahachie (just South of Dallas) and Cleburne (Just South of FW).
They have Central Markets in Dallas, Fort Worth, Plano, and Southlake. I never really cared for Central Market though. I just want a regular HEB.

HEB isn't going to DFW. It has taken them years to establish what they have on the outskirts of Houston.
Draw a line from San Antonio to Freeport to McAllen to Laredo, then back to San Antonio. What Walmart don't own in that Box, HEB does.

I have no doubt in my mind that HEB can kick @$$ here in the metroplex for price alone! Food at Albertsons,Krogers, and Tom Thumb are outrageous, which is one of the reasons I go to WalMart. I'll go to a Tom Thumb if I just need a quick item and don't want the busy hassel of a Walmart. I'm an accountant. I'm cheap by nature lol
I hate the fact that the stores up here make you have some sort of discount card and it still doesn't lower prices to beat Walmart. Walmart doesn't require you to have some sort of discount card...its low already.
I'm going to email HEB :)

HEB is an aggresive to the point of mean-assed competitor in the grocery business. Fiesta, Randals, Kroger, etc from Houston are trying to fight them off in their own markets, little less want to take them on in a town of 60,000.
Albertson spent a ton opening new stores all over south Texas about ten years ago. They were cool and had great stuff. But price wise, HEB whipped their tails and caused them to close most, if not all of their new stores before Victoria's old store closed.
I went there once before they closed....meat turned brown, lettuce wilted, and the eggs hatched before I could get home. Apparently, inventory turn was not their strong suit.

The workers at the Wal-Mart I go to are friendly and its a pretty new and clean store. I've had stockers coming thru the isle with boxes and they always say "Excuse me sir" when passing thru.
I'm at Walmart like every Sunday to buy food for the work week and the greeters already know me. One greeter was like "See you next week!" LOL...thats when I realized I'm in that store too damn much! haha

Over the past couple of years I have email contacted the large grocery store chains operating in Houston and San Antonio and all say they appreciated the thought but there are no plans to open a store in Victoria. Don't know what the hold up is but I told them there has to be a lot of money here seems like. Stores keep opening up and a lot of traffic, large sales tax receipts.
Competition is the key to quality goods and prices, outside of government anyway, and we just don't have that much in the grocery department here in Victoria.

RedRage00 I have to agree with you. Albertson’s was always higher on prices. Plus they did not always treat their employees well, I remember a time that a mentally challenged person worked there and was treated with complete disrespect. That is when I stopped shopping there, but not until I talked to management and informed them of what happened. To me that was completely uncalled for.
As for Wal-Mart, I can not walk in there without someone saying hello. I will admit that there are times that I am in a hurry and need to get out fast and can’t but that is not the cashiers fault. Some of the cashiers know me by my first name and call me by it. They also ask my mother if they have not seen me in a couple of days how I am doing. To me that goes above and beyond customer service. They do not hesitate to help, I also see the rude customers you are talking about, I will make a comment to the cashier that they had forgotten to take their “happy pill” today, don’t let them sour your day. They laugh and carry on. People need to remember that the cashiers have a hard job standing sometimes for 8 hours a day waiting on many different people, and the last person they had thru their line may have been difficult and they may just need to be cheered up.
So go up with a smile and remember they have a job to do so like many of us we do not want someone coming in and making our day difficult so why make theirs.

Albertsons was always clean because no one ever went there. It was too expensive for Victorians. My first checking account was at the IBC in Albertsons and I was always there when I needed to go to the bank and there was never a line for anything in Albertons. Everyone was at HEB because it was cheaper. When I worked at HEB we had customers every single moment of the day...non stop. At night, when you were closing, is when you'd find all the crap that customers do....like hiding meat behind the chip bags because they were too lazy to go back and put it up....by the time we'd find it its rotting and gross.
When I was a senior in HS our economics teacher had us do a little homework assignment where we went to Walmart, HEB, and Albertsons to compare prices on the exact same items. Albertsons was more expensive in every single category. I'm not surprised they didn't last in Victoria. I think I remember a bottle of Tylenol being $2 more at Albertsons than HEB. Most people want the lowest price and if you can't compete there then you're in trouble.

RedRage....Albertson's when they were here were a bit higher on pretty much everything....however, I loved that store and would drive all the way across town and pay that small percentage more. The store was always so clean, their meat was the best around and was reasonable....I remember buying whole tenderloins there all the time and they were the best I have ever gotten anywhere - melt in your mouth. The checkers never changed, very low turnover and I liked the fact that they hired the handicapped.
Dicks on the other hand is significantly more expensive and the store generally smells like rotten fruit or vegetables when I go in and is not clean. Everyone is friendly, but then there are so many things they do not carry. I would love to shop there but just can't.
I have e-mailed both Fiesta and Albertson's asking them to consider putting a store in Victoria and recanting the lack of competition in this town.
Sometimes I think Wal-Mart and HEB have a pack that they will purposely not keep shelves stocked. It never fails that the most common and needed items are totally missing, and finding someone to help you or go to the back for more is an exercise in futility.
And the new HEB....God I hate that store. At least at Wal-mart if you just need a few groceries you can limit your excursion to one side of the store. Not that stupid HEB Super-whatever. You are going to have to walk 10 miles and take 45 minutes to find your 5 or 6 items. And another complaint is that some of the common items they do not stock at all....but instead have all this exotic gourmet stuff that no one around here is buying anyway. I used to shop HEB weekly....but now go perhaps once a month and that is for the few items that only they have which I prefer. I don't want to have to walk through lawn furniture and gourmet cookware to get my Cheerios.

TheObserver,
If you know anything about Walmart then you would know that a majority of their stores are in small towns. That is how Walmart started....by going to small towns where no one else wanted to open up shop. It was part of their strategy. They started by focusing on towns with a population between 5,000-25,000.
Victoria has to have the rudest customers that I have ever encountered. Even when I go home to visit I see people being rude throughout HEB and Walmart, etc. Especially the people who think they are part of the "upper class" in Victoria. When I was at HEB, I had credit cards thrown at me because the person thought they were too good to swipe it themselves. Then they give you this attitude like "Ugh, I'm better than you cause you are just a cashier" HA! If they only knew now :)
I know what is like to work in retail which is why I am always friendly when I go to grocery stores. It's no surprise that I always encounter friendly people at WalMart and other stores when I approach them with a FRIENDLY ATTITUDE.

Kmart was terrible. I believe they had a question on their application that asked, "Are you lazy, stupid, careless, angry, and capable of treating customers like garbage"? If you check yes, your hired.
I went there a lot, and only saw a qualified register operator one time. Absolutely the worst service I have ever recieved from any store anywhere. It's funny that an HEB can sustain itself in the exact location.

As a frequent shopper of Victoria's Wal*Mart Supercenter, I can't recall one time where I was treated rudely or unfairly by any of the employees and I've been a customer of the Supercenter since it opened in March 1994 - and for many years before that I shopped the Wal-Mart discount store in Victoria and never had a bad experience with employees there either. Customers, on the other hand, are a whole different story. I can't tell you how many times I've encountered people blocking the isles because they're too busy gossiping to notice that other people exist. If you want to talk with someone, fine, just make sure you're not in the way of everyone else. Another thing that irritates me is when these parents bring their bratty, undisciplined children into the store and let them run around unsupervised. And of course, they're yelling, screaming and making the most noise possible. Great shopping experience, huh? Some people don't have the qualifications to be a parent. Another problem is that, most of the time, the store is overcrowded. There are just too many people in Victoria to have only one Wal*Mart Supercenter. I've said for several years that Wal*Mart needs to build another Supercenter on the other side of the city. (US HWY 59/Rio Grande) If HEB can support two stores ('HEB Plus' and a gigantic 'HEB') in Victoria, Wal*Mart should have no trouble making a profit with two Supercenters. I'm still upset that we lost our Super Kmart Center in May-June 2002. That was a really nice store and I was really sad to see it go. I keep wishing it would come back, but that seems very unlikely. It's almost impossible to find a Kmart anymore. As for Wal*Mart, I've found that the best time to shop there is during the night/early morning, say from 2 am to 7 am, but that's not always an option. If I have to go during the day, it's during the week (M-F) and early in the morning (7 am to 10 am) I refuse to go on Saturdays and Sundays anymore. Everybody and their mothers are there on weekends. The parking lot is an ocean of cars. An awful, awful experience that I will never repeat again.
I find it amusing that Wal*Mart seems to be the only grocery/retail corporation that gets overly-hassled for having bad employees and bad service. I'm guessing it's partly because they're the largest retailer in the world and that makes it more convenient. The bigger you are, the more of a target you are. (pun intended)
And if so many people hate Wal*Mart, how do you explain the high number of traffic that passes through each of their stores? Can you imagine what would happen if Wal*Mart folded and closed all of their stores? Millions of people out of work, less competition in the food and retail industry. You think the economy is bad now...
Yes, I realize there are some genuinely rude and smarmy Wal*Mart employees out there. Unfortunately, you're going to find people like that everywhere. But just because someone gets paid hourly for working as a cashier or stock clerk at Wal*Mart or any other such place doesn't mean that they're your personal doormat. Respect is earned.

You're obviously looking for a verbal battle. Tell us some of the great things about the cities you've named.

Thanks, redrage. Couldn't agree more. Sometimes, customers just go in looking for conflict.
I witnessed one the other day at HEB. A young lady was checking out at the self checkout and was using a $5 coupon for diapers. The process requires you to scan the coupon, then place it in the slot at the bottom so you can't go back and re-use it. Well, the lady did not want to put the coupon in the slot. The cashier told her she had to stick it in there, and she flat out told her no, that she was going to keep it. You have to give it up so you can't keep using it over and over again, DUH.
After refusing to listen, the lady told the cashier to take the diapers off, then walked over to where the managers were standing and told them the CASHIER had an attitude problem and needed to be talked to.
Is it just me, or was this young lady LOOKING for conflict? She obviously went in there ready for a confrontation of some sorts, and I'm sure that poor employee paid the price for it. There will always be someone dissatisfied with something, it's like they have a giant stick stuck up you know where and nothing can get it out. I wonder how they would feel if I went to their jobs, assuming they even work, and treated them like the dirt on the bottom of my shoes.

SouthTexas,
You're talking about not being able to afford Dicks but you want an ALBERTSONS? Are you high? Since when is Albertons cheap? If you can't afford Dicks then you really aren't going to be able to afford Albertsons.
I shop at Wal Mart here because its a hell of a lot cheaper than Albertsons, Krogers, and Tom Thumb here in the metroplex.
I'll take my chances with the "rude" wal mart employees that I have yet to encounter at any of the wal marts that I have ever been to in many difference cities.

tstorm is right. You make it what you want....I have been shopping at Walmart for years and I have never had any problems. Some of you people will never be satisfied at all. Walmart employees can offer you a free back massage and you'll still find something to complain about.
If the lines are long at walmart guess what? Wait it out...are you in that much of a rush? If you're in a rush then don't go shopping....go to a corner store if you're in a rush for something quick.
Some of you are r3tarded if you have to ask a Walmart employee where things are at...how many years have you been going to walmart and you still don't know how its set up? Talk about r3tarded. Look at it like this. ONE SIDE IS FOOD AND THE OTHER SIDE IS NOT.....DUH. Read the signs. I do it all the time and I find everything I need without having to ask a walmart employee.
I worked at HEB for 4 years when I was in college and I could tell some really horrible stories from rude @$$ customers. No matter how nice you are and how much you smile you'll still have customers that will treat you like crap. So a lot of you need to think about what kind of attitude you are presenting while you are shopping...I bet you're not as good of a customer as you think. I was so glad when I graduated and left HEB.

I have never had many problems with any employee of walmart. I go for clothes, cell phone accessories, and other misc. items. Sometimes my parents go grocery shopping there. The only thing I can rip on walmart for is the bathrooms. They are so poorly maintained it is not funny. The stall doors in one at the front of the store feel as though they are about to fall off. I predict that in the next yr or so, walmart'll start making plans to build another building due to the depreciating value on this one.

There is absolutely nothing that I need bad enough to go fight the people at Wal-Mart ! I tried going to the store in Victoria and after trying to get someone to help me with the cell phones ( the clerk was talking on her cell phone to the other clerks boyfriend..) I gave up... I tried one other time to go purchase a few items and the screaming unspervised children were enough to make you drink.. I agree it's very frustrating to have to wait so long when you're on the opposite side of the check stand, but honestly I think a lot of complaining would be solved if everyone just had to work their job for one day.
As someone that has had several jobs as a cashier, let me tell you the abuse customers may put up with from employees is far less compared to what the employees put up with from the customers.
I always tried to maintain a good smile and friendly greeting to every customer, but this did not save me from having some of the rudest encounters at any job I've had. I've been called stupid to my face for bagging certain items in a way a customer did not approve of (putting frozen dinners in with frozen beef), and been held personally responsible for things that were not my fault, such as pricing errors. Customers have to understand a cashier does not price the items manually, they run them over a scanner.
Constantly, customers would bring the wrong coupon with the wrong item, then take it out on us and expect to get it for that price.
And I cannot count the times a customer grabbed an item from the wrong area and read the wrong price tag, then wanted it for the price they saw. Customers in stores these days will not walk back to the department they got an item from and put it back in place if they decide they won't want it. Which leaves another customer to grab it from wherever it was left at, and assume it is the price on the nearest shelf. This is not the store's fault.
Add to that the fact that customers would leave items at the foot of the registers after deciding they didn't want them, a lot of them perishable items such as meat and ice cream that go bad before you even notice they are there.
If the customers have no respect for the store's merchandise or its employees, it makes it difficult to show respect for them as well.
There is no excuse to treat someone like dirt on your shoes just because they are serving you. They're employees there to help you, not bonded slaves.
My friend is a manager at a local store and he comes home with the most ridiculous stories about what customers in Victoria do. Just yesterday, they escorted a lady from the store for calling an employee a racial slur because she wouldn't allow her to use the wrong coupon.
In regards to this story, the cashier had probably had people complaining to her about the lines all day long, which is the manager's problem, not hers. I'm sure she wasn't having a good day, either.
The same thing with waiters. I am way more easygoing about them now, having been one. Sometimes you need to step on the other side of the fence.
Yes, there are some employees that are just rude in general, but from experience I know that for every rude employee there are 3 equally rude customers just waiting to make you day a living hell.

Ok Ok Wal-Marts have had their share of problems. I have two family members that work at a local Wal-Mart (not Victorias). Well I get to hear of some pretty rude customers that expect the Pharmacy techs to bend rules. So in some cases I feel for the employees. Know this most of them are part time employees and get no benefits. That's right you have to be full time and they watch your time like a hawk. So remember that when the cashier is working late because someone (full timer) is running late and getting an extra hour or two, just to be told to come in late the next day. You would be a little upset too...Wal-Marts are here to stay, remember all the mom and pop stores are gone

I haven't had very many bad experiences with the Walmart employees. For the most part they are a pretty nice group. Occasionally I will run into a slow register operator and normally I can spot a dud before I get in line.
My problem is with the customers. Have you ever been walking down an isle and see a family of fat people walking side by side refusing to get out of the way? This is the thing that bothers me. I find the patrons to be rude and ill mannered much more than the employees.

Perhaps at times the treatment you receive is a reflection of your attitude. Interesting how that works. I've never had to bag my own purchases, but would gladly do that if it were expected of me. I've encountered a rude clerk or two, but, amazingly, on a return visit and going through their checkout, I found them quite pleasant. Life catches up with them, too. So give benefit of the doubt unless the nasty is a consistent occurrence.
Every time I have to have a prescription refilled and the pharmacist says, "That will be $4.00 please," I thank WalMart for being a leader in helping give people a break on the high price of medicine. Do you think HEB, Walgreens, etc. would have lowered their prices voluntarily? I don't think so.
HEB is pretty sucky on their benefits and wages generosity, too. Not everybody can be an overpaid, underworked public servant, unfortunately.

Wal Mart has the rudest people in the world working there AND shopping there!! Wal Mart does a terrible job at keeping their shelves stocked. The most common items are always out! I was by the shampoo just today and two female workers were standing in the way, not about to move so others could find what they needed and all you could hear them saying was how they hated customers and they hated picking up after "stupid a**hole$" that leave stuff out of place. They should've been fired on the spot. Apparently it is not required to watch your mouth and to be nice to customers anymore because stockers and checkers both are just as rude as can be and act like you are just really annoying them by asking a question or just checking out in the two lanes that are open. I only go to self check out now even when I have $200 in groceries. That way I don't have to put up with slow and extremely rude checkers that feel they need to make comments on what kind of groceries I'm buying and drop my bananas into the bag to bruise them up. So if you want good friendly no hassle service, check out your own groceries because if you're at Wal Mart, that is the only way you're going to get it!!

Everyone is entitled to a bad day. How much time does this person have on their hands to run a BS rant on Walmart ? Like they care ? I ripped McDonalds a new *** at the corporate level and I never even got as much as a response letter. But the next time I get black coffee when I say I asked for 3 creams on a Monday morning and the McDonalds employee says "come get it yourself then" I'm pulling that sumbish through the drive through window myself!!

For sure, don't go to the automotive department for anything. Oil changes......plan on 2 hours! New tires, plan on 5 hours! Rotate your tires or fix a flat, forget it. They will say, "there's about a 5 hour wait." Then go to the refund desk. One clerk waiting on 6 different people.
Bottom line for me, Walmart has a good price, but the service is the worst in Victoria. Just decide which you want for yourself. Low prices or good service.

The problem in Victoria is that Wal-Mart and HEB have a monopoly in this town. K-Mart and Albertson's left at close to the same time and now both Wal-Mart and HEB act like they are the only ones in town....and they are right.
I have tried to shop at Dick's but just can't afford it.....the last time when I just needed a few items and ran in there, the cottage cheese I bought was a dollar more than what I pay at Wal-Mart. I know Dick's can't compete with the monstor Wal-Mart but it is sad.
What we need is an Albertson's or a Fiesta or another K-Mart to come in here and up the competition a bit.
I can honestly say I have never had a problem with the checkers at Wal-Mart.....even on bad days they are friendly.....guess I have been lucky. But I do know they treat their employees very badly and hire so many part time people in order to get out of paying benefits and that you are pretty much buying exclusively Chinese when you shop there....but what are you going to do. Groceries are so expensive...I don't have the luxury to not consider price.

Wow...My wife and I must be the luckiest people in Victoria. The only unpleasant experiences we've had in Wal-Mart have had to do with waiting in line at check out. Seldom have we been farther back than number three in line. Never have I ever had a Wal-Mart employee treat me rudely. In fact, the times when I've asked questions about products, if the person I asked couldn't give me the answer, INVARIABLY the question was bucked up to someone who could answer it. I have never been made to feel that I was intruding on the time of any employee, from the person stocking shelves to the department manager. The only aggrivation I consistently have is in the pharmacy and that is because they have had to take certain products off the shelf and put them behind the counter where they have to be handed out in person -- and THAT isn't the fault of the store.
Do I have issues with Wal-Mart stores going into towns and putting old, established mom and pop stores out of business? Yes, I do. I think it's a shame that has happened, but I am not one who usually enjoys change in any aspect of my life. I do, however, try to cope with it and make the best of it. I don't understand why, if Wal-Mart is as bad as being claimed here and the employees are as uniformly rude as is being claimed here, the parking lot is always so full and the lines at the cash registers are so long. You'd think people would vote with their feet and go elsewhere. There are other places in town to buy groceries and hardware and cameras and clothing and hamburgers.

I like good service, I don’t shop price.
The businesses that treat me like an “old friend” assist me when needed, let me be when I tell them I don’t need any help and provide a good product at a fair price those are the folks who I like to do business with.
For groceries Albertsons is the best chain I have ever been in. Man.. do they take care of you.. I have always been treated fantastically in those stores. Too Bad Victoria doesn’t have one.

I noticed that after K Mart closed here WalMart started going down hill.
A young lady one of my sons went to school with had worked at WalMart for years going to school. She said she was finishing up a sale with a customer and wound up being late taking lunch. She was reprimanded for going to lunch late, even though she was finishing up a sale. It's called customer relations. She told me it was not the first time, and it was getting to be regular to do that there. Make sure you take breaks and lunch right on time even if the customer has to wait.
Of course she was telling me while explaining she why she was working at another business.

I have worked for Wal-mart. I have to agree, the people that work there are VERY rude..The last walmart I worked in, they had the same people working there for years.. all they cared about was getting the store manager a new car every year.. YES a new car..The store manager didnt care about these little old ladies. Wal-mart is a racket, lower prices my a$$, they lower one price and raise it somewhere else in the store.... I could write a book about some of the crap they do..For sure they don't care about thier employees..just the almighty dollar.Whenever possible I shop somewhere else now.

It must be that way at ALL Walmart stores. I live 115 miles away from Victoria. I usually shop at HEB, however there are a few things I can only get at Walmart, so when I must go, I stock up for a month. But each time, always on the weekend, there are only a few lanes open with at least 5 customers already in line. The cashiers are SLOW and usually always make mistakes! Where I shop, there are no self check-out lines unfortunately.

You know that's why they have the self checkouts so you don't have to deal with that crap, I'll go to one of those before I go to a checker.

CWF - I'll give you the bagging part, but you are waaay off base on the rest of it. Walmart register operators are paid to work the register and be friendly to customers. I'll be willing to bet that the friendly operators are friendly all the time and the crummy person that was written about is crummy most of the time. Can you imagine how worthless a person has to be to stand in front of customers and act like a baby. Or repeatedly act stupid and mix up different peoples items.
I've copied the article and am sending it to Walmart. They are better than this or most register operators are anyway.
I've worked a register before at places way busier than walmart. I remember having bad days and I didn't treat the customers like garbabge just because I was.
I would love to have the name of the crybaby so I could attach it to the letter. Oh and don't worry, I send emails to walmart telling thwm about good employees as well.

We all understand how frustrating it can be when things do not go as well as we would like them to. Let us as a community at least try to take the "high road" and perhaps put ourselves in someone else's position. You were just unlucky in the fact that while your were there it was busy. Walmart has to keep it's costs down and has a certain number of employees at work at certain times (more people during busier times, less during slower times). This is an unfortunate thing whenever you are in a hurry, but does an extra 10 minutes at a store really hurt a person? The person working may not have bean overly nice, but she was probably just as upset as the rest of you because there were not more registers open and she had to do it all herself. I was under the impression that everyone was to put their groceries in their own carts at Walmart. I always have. I thought that was why they do not have baggers and why they do have the carousel bagging stations. Lastly, everyone makes mistakes! That cashier is only human, the same as you and i. Let's all try to do a cashier's job at Walmart, put up with the public, and see if we do not have a bad day every once in a while.
